INTRODUCTION TO CHILD AND ADOLESCENT COUNSELLING

As individuals working with children and adolescents in their formative years, it is important that you teachers and the counsellors within GES understand critical psychosocial issues relating to students (i.e. children and adolescents).

Registering to partake in this training will help you to acquire knowledge to help provide adequate age-appropriate counselling support to aid students in their academic, social, and emotional development.

introduce teachers to the general knowledge, skills, theories and techniques for child and adolescent counselling within the school environment
train teachers to apply basic counselling skills, techniques and referral procedures for child and adolescent counselling to help them manage their class, the learner and the learning environment.
Teachers play a major role in the provision of counselling although they are not professional counsellors.
Their role is to identify learners’ counselling needs and make referrals to the school counsellor for professional support.
Teachers can only do this when they have the basic counselling skills that will help them identify students’ counselling needs.
It is for this reason that the teacher education curriculum at the college level has an element of counselling.
Unfortunately, these teachers do not have access to any refresher course on these counselling skills once they complete college training.
In effects, they are unable to understand the learners’ psychological challenges that may negatively affect the learners’ total lives (academic, social, psychological and spiritual).
This counselling training is therefore designed to introduce teachers and counsellors to the fundamental counselling knowledge, skills, techniques and psychological support systems that will help them identify, solve and restore the counselling needs of learners within and outside the classroom.
Such knowledge will also help in the provision of adequate age-appropriate counselling support to aid learners in their academic, social, psychological and spiritual development towards the achievement of the educational philosophy of Ghana.
