    QUALIFICATIONS

    GUIDELINES FOR SELECTING AN UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME

    1. Most first degree programmes of study are of Four (4) Years duration
    2. Minimum/General Entry Requirements
      1. WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

    An applicant for admission to a degree programme in the University must have CREDIT passes in the THREE WASSCE/SSSCE Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), and CREDIT passes in THREE WASSCE/SSSCE Elective Subjects or its equivalent relevant to the chosen programme with aggregate 24 or better

    (WASSCE: A1-C6/SSSCE A-D) D7, E8 & F9 ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR ADMISSION PURPOSES.

    **It is worth noting that the THREE Core Subjects are prerequisite for all Programmes of study at our University.

    1. GCE/IGCSE (CAMBRIDGE) ‘A’ & ‘O’LEVELS/MATURE APPLICANTS

    Holders of GCE/IGCSE must have FIVE credits at the ‘O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics (or its approved equivalent), plus passes in at least THREE (3) subjects at the Advanced Level/Three Credits in the case of mature applicants.  In addition, the applicant must fulfill the appropriate Faculty or Departmental requirements.

    1. GENERAL BUSINESS CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (GBCE)

    Holders of GBCE must have passes in THREE Compulsory Subjects including English Language and passes in THREE Elective Subjects including Business Mathematics.

    1. ADVANCED BUSINESS CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (ABCE)

    HOLDERS OF ABCE must have passes in THREE Compulsory Subjects plus THREE

    (3) Optional Subjects relevant to the Programme of study.

    1. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB)

    Holders of International Baccalaureate (IB) should have a minimum of grade 4 at the Higher Level (HL) in Three (3) Subjects relevant to the Programme of choice and minimum of grade 5 in Chemistry for Health and Allied Sciences. For Engineering, at least grade 5 at the Higher level (HL) in Mathematics. In addition, one must have a minimum of grade 4 in English Language and Mathematics at the Standard Level (SL) and at least grade C in a Science subject at the IGCSE.

    1. AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL GRADE 12

    An applicant for admission to a degree programme in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi must have a Final Grade Point of at least 3.0. For admission to the University School of Medicine and Dentistry, an applicant must have a Final Grade Point of at least 3.25. Admissions will be to the Year 1.

    1. POST-FIRST DEGREE LAW ADMISSION

    A prospective student who holds a bachelor’s degree (first graduate degree) can apply to earn a first professional degree in law (LL.B). Duration of programme is three (3) years.

    OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION

    • Ghanaian/Other Applicants with Foreign Results/Certificate

    The University shall request an evaluation of results/Certificate other than those mentioned above, (a) to (f), from the Ghana Tertiary Commission (GTEC) and/or other International Credential Evaluation Agency to facilitate the determination of the suitability of the applicant for admission.

    • Applicants from French Speaking Countries must provide a minimum of one year English Proficiency Certificate.
    • Documents not in English should be accompanied by accredited translations in English.
    • Transfer of Applicants

    Applicants from other universities (local and international) who are seeking admission to continue their programme are required to submit official transcript through the KNUST Admission Office or the International Programmes Office (IPO) to the Head of Department. Proof of English proficiency and English translation of the transcript must be added where necessary.

    3.0       MATURE APPLICANTS

    Applicants must have attained the age of 25 years at the time of submitting the Application Forms and must have a minimum of TWO (2) years post qualification experience. In addition, applicant must satisfy any of the following qualifications:

    1. Diploma or Higher National Diploma Applicants: Diploma or Higher National Diploma in Agriculture or Agriculture-related programme from a recognized institution. OR
    2. GCE Applicants: Five (5) credits at O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, or Additional Mathematics, and Additional General Science.
    3. WASSCE/SSSCE Applicants: Credits passes in THREE (3) Elective subjects in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics or General Agriculture or Crop Husbandry or and Horticulture.

    Short-listed applicants may take an Entrance Examination and pass an interview.

    • An applicant must satisfy the requirements for WASSCE OR ‘A’ Level.

    3.0       MATURE APPLICANTS

    • Applicant must have attained the age of 25 years at the time of the application.
    • Must have a minimum of Two (2) Years post qualification experience in a related field of Natural Resources Management.

Other Diploma holders with less than 70% as their CWA would be required to have three years’ work experience in the real estate industry and in addition pass an interview to be admitted into first year of the Programme.

    Candidates must have a BA, BFA or B.Ed (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) degree in any Visual Arts discipline. Candidates must have at least 60% in Research Methodology and Thesis Writing at the undergraduate level. At least one-year teaching or school administration
    experience would be an advantage.

    ii. MPhil. Art Education (Regular/Weekend)

    Candidates must have a BA, BFA or B.Ed (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) degree in any Visual Arts discipline. Candidates must have at least 60% in Research Methodology and Thesis Writing at the undergraduate level. Candidates must submit a research proposal on an
    appropriate topic that is relevant to teaching, learning, and administration of the Arts, Vocational or General Education. Candidates must pass an entrance examination and interview with a minimum of 65%.

    iii. MPhil. Art Education (Top-Up)
    Candidates must have a MA, MFA, or MComm from a recognised university. Candidates must submit a research proposal on an appropriate topic that is relevant to teaching, learning, and administration of the Arts, Vocational or General Education. Candidates must pass an entrance examination and interview with a minimum of 65%.

    iv. Master of Education (M.Ed.) – General Education (Regular/Sandwich)

    Candidates must have a BSc, BA, BFA or B.Ed. (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) degree in an appropriate field of study from a recognised university. Candidates must have a minimum of 60% in Research Methodology and Thesis writing at the undergraduate level. Candidates with at least one year of classroom teaching or school administration experience
    would be at an advantage. A candidate who does not satisfy the requirement stated above but is otherwise adjudged suitable by the Department Board, shall, where practicable, be interviewed and in addition, may be required to take an entrance examination.

    v. MSc. Educational Innovation and Leadership Science (Regular/Sandwich)

    Candidates must have a BA, BFA or B.Ed. (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) degree in any discipline. Candidates must have a minimum of 60% in Research Methodology and Thesis writing at the undergraduate level. Candidates must have at least one-year of classroom
    teaching or school administration experience.

    vi. MPhil. Educational Innovation and Leadership Science (Regular/Weekend)

    Candidates must have an MA in Education, M.Ed., MSc or a B.Ed. (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) in any discipline. Candidates must have a minimum of 60% in Research in Methodology and Thesis writing at the postgraduate or undergraduate level.     Candidates must have an MPhil in Fine Art, Art Education, or any Visual Arts discipline from a recognized university. Candidates must show evidence of research scholarship: Thesis, Project Report, Journal article or other acceptable publication. Candidates must also submit a comprehensive research proposal on an appropriate topic in any Visual Arts discipline or
    Arts Administration. Candidates must pass an entrance examination and interview with a minimum of 70%.

    2. Department of Teacher Education

    i. MPhil. Educational Planning and Administration

    Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of 3.0 or CWA of 60 or above in any Education discipline or related field. Candidates with a good Bachelor’s degree in a non-education related area but has PGD in Education or Diploma in Education OR Candidates with MEd/MSc/MA in Educational Administration or any related area (without research) from a recognized university with a CGPA of above 2.5 and have taken and passed a course in
    Research Methods may enrol on the programme.

    ii. MPhil. Mathematics Education

    Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of 3.0 or a CWA of 60 or better in Mathematics Education or any related discipline. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of 3.0 or CWA of 60 or better in Mathematics or any related discipline and has an MEd in Education, PGD in Education or Diploma in Education may enrol on the programme.

    Candidates with MEd/MSc/MA in Mathematics Education or any related area (without research) from a recognized university with a CGPA of above 2.5 or CWA of 60 may enrol on the programme.

    iii. MPhil. Language Education and Literacy

    Candidates with a non-education bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a CGPA of 2.5 or a CWA of 50.0 which is second-class lower or better. Candidate MUST be a lecturer, tutor or instructor in a tertiary institution.

    ii. Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)

    Candidates have a non-education bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of 2.5 or a CWA of 50.0 which is second-class lower or better. Candidates should be a teacher or have the intention of being professional teachers at any level of Ghana’s education system.

    iii. MEd. Educational Planning and Administration (Sandwich)

    Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of 2.5 or CWA of 60 and above in any education discipline or related field OR a good Bachelor’s degree in a non-education related area but have an MEd in Education, PGD in Education or Diploma in Education.

    iv. MEd. Mathematics Education (Sandwich)

    Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics Education or any related discipline OR a good Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or any related discipline and have an MEd in Education, PGD in Education or Diploma in Education.
