New Collective Agreement; GNAT’s Update

New Collective Agreement; GNAT’s Update

We, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), are issuing this statement to address the pressing matter of the expiration of the 2020 Collective Agreement for Teaching Staff within the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the need for urgent negotiations. As teachers, we play a vital role in shaping the future of our nation, and it’s crucial that our concerns are addressed to ensure a conducive working environment.

The 2020 Collective Agreement, which was signed by the Government of Ghana, represented by the Minister for Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and the Teacher Unions, including GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT-GH, marked a significant milestone. It was meant to be in effect for three years, commencing retrospectively in January 2020.

However, as of now, the agreement has run its course, and we find ourselves at a crucial juncture where our concerns have not been adequately addressed. Many of the issues that were part of the 2020 agreement, such as allowances for teachers in underserved areas, entertainment allowance, housing/rent allowance, car maintenance allowance, fuel allowance, electricity subsidy, a new scheme of service, clothing allowance, risk allowance, and more, remain unresolved.

Outstanding Allowances:

Allowances for Teachers in Underserved Areas
Entertainment Allowance
Housing/Rent Allowance
Car Maintenance Allowance
Fuel Allowance
Electricity Subsidy
A New Scheme of Service
Clothing Allowance
Risk Allowance
In light of these circumstances, GNAT is calling upon the Government to engage in renewed negotiations for a Collective Agreement for Teaching Staff within the GES. We urge the Government to approach this with the urgency it deserves to ensure a harmonious working environment for teachers and to address the outstanding issues promptly.

We would like to emphasize that failure to heed our call for negotiations and address our concerns will not be in the best interest of any party. GNAT has strived to maintain a peaceful industrial environment, and we are committed to keeping it that way. However, it is essential that our concerns are addressed in a timely manner to sustain this tranquility.

To our leaders, we want to make it abundantly clear that we hold them accountable for ensuring that a new Collective Agreement that accounts for the current challenges faced by teaching staff within the GES is negotiated at the earliest opportunity. We implore them to take the necessary steps to prevent any disruptions in our educational system.

In conclusion, we, the Regional Secretariat of GNAT – Brong Ahafo, issue this statement with the hope that our concerns will be acknowledged and acted upon. As educators, our dedication to the growth and development of our nation remains unwavering, and we believe that addressing these issues is a vital step towards achieving that goal.
