Consider increasing the allowances of Trainee Teachers and pay all arrears

UPDATE ON A MEETING WITH THE GHANA TERTIARY EDUCATION COMMISSION AND FARE WAGES & SALARIES COMMISSION ON THURSDAY 14TH APRIL, 2022.
We extend to you warm greetings from the National Secretariat of the Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana. Fellow trainees, in the quest of the Dzunu led administration to serve in the interest of all, a delegation was set to meet with the leadership of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and Fare Wages & Salaries Commission on 14 April, 2022 to discuss issues of concern to teacher trainee fraternity.
Synopsis of the issues discussed are highlighted below:
A. CENTSAG STRIKE AND WAY FORWARD.
Pursuant to the continuous propagation of the irreversible effects of the CENTSAG strike in the past days. the Director General of GTEC, Prof. Salifu Mohammed in his address to the delegation emphasized that the concerns of CENTSAG are on the tables of all stakeholders for lasting solutions. He made it clear that GTEC had discussed matters extensively with CENTSAG which yielded in the suspension of the strike and more to that, they had met the leadership of CENTSAG earlier to reach on a consensus where an MoU was to be signed on that very day. To allay the fear of such happenings in the coming days, the leadership of TTAG pleaded that lasting solutions be resolved on.
Dr. Edward Kwapong of Fare Wages and Salaries Commission also assured the delegation of the commitment and efforts of the commission to help find a solution to these issues.

B. PAYMENT OF ALLOWANCES & ALL ARREARS.

with imperative probes into the undue delay in the payment of trainees’ allowances, the Director General of GTEC, Prof. Salifu Mohammed disclosed that GTEC with Ministry of Education had already initiated steps in the past weeks for the payment of the allowances and all arrears. He added that PRINCOF had served a notice on its inability to feed trainees in the coming days after the Easter break should they not receive the arrears of the feeding component, hence all necessary measures will be employed for the payment to be made soon.
The leadership adjured GTEC to consider increasing the allowances to yield an increment on the feeding component due to the constant hike in prices of food stuffs. He assured the leadership of engaging all relevant stakeholders for an onward consideration.

C. ACCOMMODATION DEFICIT & THE DEMAND FOR NEW BUSES TO AID IN EXECUTION OF STS PROGRAM IN COLLEGES

The leadership expressed worry on the dire consequences on the issues of accommodation deficit across the 46 public colleges of education citing instances where SRC Secretariats had been converted to halls of residence.
Prof. Salifu noteworthily admitted the concern and uttered that, advanced steps had been taken by stakeholders to start the construction of hostel facilities on the various campuses of the Colleges of Education. He assured the leadership of TTAG of aiding to fast track the initiation of the projects.
Conversely, he declared that steps were far advanced in making provisions of buses for Colleges to help in facilitating the STS program. He disclosed that the recent publication by the Ministry of Finance on the ban on importation of vehicles has necessitated for GTEC to make some necessary alterations and adjustments in the procurement processes.

D. PRACTICUM AND PROJECT WORK AS WELL AS VARIED EXAMINATION FEE CHARGES.

The leadership of TAG brought forth a discussion on its earlier petition on the above subject. Prof. Salifu Mohammed opined that he is ignorant on these issues nonetheless pledged to carry them on for a sound resolution with the institutions involved.
Conclusively, the leadership commended all its stakeholders for the immediate steps taken to suspend the CENTSAG strike to find proper solutions to the concerns raised. The leadership also appreciated GTEC for creating an enabling environment to strengthen its bond with TTAG.
