The Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has directed that the final opportunity for candidates to write the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) must conclude no later than August 30.

Speaking to the media, the Minister emphasized the importance of setting a firm date and urged all stakeholders to collaborate with the Registrar of the National Teaching Council (NTC) to ensure the process is completed within the stipulated timeframe.

“If there is a last opportunity for those who sat and couldn’t make it, that process should not travel beyond 30th August,” — Hon. Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister acknowledged the ongoing concerns surrounding the licensure exams and reiterated the government’s commitment to reforming teacher assessment and certification processes.

He commended the chairman and members of the committee responsible for reviewing the teacher licensure framework, praising their far-reaching recommendations that aim to shift from a purely paper-based exam to a more comprehensive and practical assessment model.

“This new model will guide the teacher licensure exam beyond solely paper-based assessments,” Mr. Iddrisu explained.

He added that the new system will include:

  • Supervised practicum evaluations

  • Structured mentorship programmes

These additions are designed to ensure that newly trained teachers demonstrate not just theoretical knowledge, but actual classroom competence.

According to Mr. Iddrisu, the reforms will be implemented as soon as practicable, after the final chance for resit candidates and those yet to take the current exam.

The goal of the new model, he noted, is to raise the standard of education by ensuring that certified teachers possess practical teaching skills in addition to academic knowledge before entering the classroom.

Meanwhile, teachers across the country have already purchased forms and registered for this year’s GTLE, with preparations in full swing. Many are eagerly waiting for confirmation from the government, as timetables have already been issued and candidates are set to write the exam later this month.
