The Minister of Education has indicated 40k desks will be supplied to public basic schools this year.

According to Kofi Asare of Eduwatch, this has already started. While this is welcome new, it is only a drop in an ocean-we need over 800k desks, 150k tables & 600k chairs for KGs.

At the current pace, it will take 20 years to provide all pupils with desks.

The procurement approach to solving the desk problem is not financially sustainable in a country where basic education gets only 5.5% of the discretionary budget of the education sector.

We suggest an inclusive approach, using public sector institutions and resources at zero profit rate.

The Minister of Education and Ghana Education Service should engage

The 47 Engineers Regiment of the GAF,

Forestry Commission,

Wood Industry Training Institute (Kumasi),

All major Wood Work Technical Institutes eg. Alavanyo Tech, ATTC, Ada Tech, Kpando Tech, Sobie Tech, Have Tech, Tamale Tech, Dagbokpa, Wa Tech, Nandaom Tech etc on a zero profit production arrangement.

MoE, set up a transparently managed Fund (with seed money from gov’t) to encourage CSOs, corporate Ghana, citizens to contribute to fund the zero profit regional level production and distribution of desks.

Much cheaper!
