Teachers Not Happy with Holiday Demands – Here is what they Rather Need

  1. Increment in Salary
  2. Transport allowance to all teachers,
  3. Rent allowance to all teachers

Teachers are not Happy with Holiday Demands

It seems People don’t know the Work of a Teacher. We are good at what we do and that is why we don’t brag about our Work. Before you say anything read till the end. We work 24hrs a day don’t be deceived.

Holidays are good for all workers who won’t be happy to rest for a day. There are lots of holidays in the Country but Teachers day is not a Holiday.

As reported by Myjoyonline.com, seekersnewsgh.com being a site for Teachers, also shared it within Teacher Groups.

Some teachers have petitioned President Akufo-Addo to declare Teachers Day which is observed on October 5 annually as a public holiday.

Among other things, some teachers are sometimes declined permission to absent themselves to partake in activities to observe the day.

In a petition signed by the President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Isaac Owusu and the Editor-in-Chief of the College of Education Journal, Larry Agbador, the teachers said although they appreciate all efforts by the President to enhance education however, the holiday must be constituted

Teachers’ take

As seekersnewsgh published in the News, the reaction rather seem negative. Teachers seem to want something else rather than a holiday with most calling the petition for a holiday a misplaced priority.

From Our  observation from the various platforms and Forums, what teachers seem to be waiting for is rather

                                     Better Conditions of service.

Since we are lucky our Minister worked in the USA( Teaching Mathematics and Information Technology  at the Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, California for ten years), , it shouldn’t be difficult getting USA Standard for the Conditions of Service for Teachers in Ghana.

Rents are high: Decent Teachers who are well respected can not even invite people home because of where they live. If you take Loan to rent, you would have to wait and take another to renew the rent.

Bungalow for teachers can reduce all these, but even if there are some small Bungalows you will be ask to…….

Most of us take multiple Loans to survive a month and then the cycle repeats itself month after month.

In most of the Social Media Groups, observed by seekernewsgh.com for sometime now, teachers are always anxious as to when Validations are in, and whether one is validated or not. From 25th everyone starts waiting alert. If by 29th Salaries are not paid teachers are in trouble. And It is repeated month after month.

Yes, all over the world teachers are forced to do something to support themselves.

The only time a teacher sees money in his account is at the end of the month 28 plus days and the money   hehehe. How do we survive?

All we need,

Better Conditions of service, just like the other work force.

To cut everything short, increase our salaries and give us allowances

  1. Increment in Salary
  2. Transport allowance to all teachers,
  3. Rent allowance to all teachers
  4. Clothing allowance to all Teachers

It is time for leaders to bargain on our salary for the 2023, from my own point of view I suggest these.
Please let us all come together to share ideas on the following points
1. Review of the Single Spine Salary Structure* (SSSS)
2. Review of Teachers Retention Premium.
3. Clothing allowance (20% of the minimum base pay)
4. Rent allowance (25% of the minimum base pay)
5. Risk allowance for Teachers who teaches in deprived areas and cross river to school.
6. Call for paperless system in GES.

But it seems you don’t know what teachers Do. Just a small glance below. Make time to read.

We wake up in the morning and start preparing for work just like everyone else. Depending on your location from school, you have to calculate the time to set off. Most spend  minimum of Ghc 10 before they get to school with some spending more than Ghc 50 a day to school. Just do the calculation for the month.

Latest by 6:30am, we are in school to receive students, and supervise some works towards preparation for lesson.

By 7:30 am, lessons have started. You go to class, check if everyone is in by marking the register, check the state of your students to see if everything is alright with them and are ready for the lesson. If any is having a fever, without medical training you have to identify it and report immediately.

If in the morning some of them have their heads down, you have to attend to them one after the other to be sure everything is fine before you proceed.

Some may be so hungry at that time, some maybe having emotional issues, you need to address all these before you start teaching.

We  don’t just go to class and then drive off teaching like that oo. If you have not seen your teacher doing it, its because he doesn’t let you know he is doing it, because we do it very well without disrupting the whole class.

After all these medical and phycological work including other things you have to do, You now inspect your previous work. You need to check if what you taught previously and the assignment you gave have been well done. Its important because some things said previously, may be heard differently. All are corrected before we proceed.

You then ask them to take their exercise books, their notes or items for the lesson. You then do assessments before the lesson start. You would now create and link what ever you are about to teach  them to their environment (thinking) also have to listen to them to clear misconceptions they already have about what you have to teach.

You teach, give assignments, mark, do corrections with them and finally give Home work  to encourage them revise what you taught at Home.  Some classes are about 45-50 students. hmm

Then you move to the next class or take the next subject to teach.  Even when it is break, you have to wait and mark corrections.

NTC COURSE FOR CPD POINTS

No Break for Teachers

No Break for you. When school closes, You have to check on them and make sure they are all gone.  Sometimes, during break, you have to stop whatever you are doing just to listen to them and solve their problems.

As you prepare to go home, you monitor some students standing at certain corners and still help them get home safely. If any doesn’t get home, you would be the leader of the search team.

Immediately you reach home, you need to start preparing for your next lesson and mark any test given.

You finish very late before going to bed. If you see a teacher out there and you think he/she is not doing these things and He is free, you are mistaking. some of us have to work very, very fast to be able to create free time for ourselves.

No holiday for Teachers

Teachers do not have Holidays. Before you go home, as some workers bags will be full of cash, yours will be full of examination scripts.  You need to mark , score and take the questions one by one and analyse it by checking the discrimination index and other things. After the analysis, you would have to compare which student could not answer the very simple ones and how they all reacted with the kind of  answers they choose/ gave to certain questions .

Go back to class, and explain or re-teach certain things base on the test results .

A data analyst  in any institutions’ allowance is almost that of a teachers’ annual salary.

We teachers are smart, hard working, dedicated and we don’t brag, All the work force in the world is combined in a single teacher, Hence, should we break one teacher down into smaller pieces, you will get, Doctor, Nurse, security Officer, Counselor, Manager, Leader, data analyst, Human resource Manager, Mother, Father etc. Just in one single teacher.

How much do you pay  your security officer? Do you pay people to protect your child at school? No, because the teacher is there.

This person does not receive any stipend, rather ours are collected by your children at school eg. sir/ madam please I lost my money and I have not eaten?

Sir/ madam I don’t have an Exercise book. You give yours or money to them to buy most times. For blue pen, even when you carry  thousand to school, it will finish before you come home, Sir/madam I don’t have pen to do the work.

See, we are good at what we do, and we love what we do, that’s why we don’t brag. But the teaching Job is very Difficult.

What do you do at your Office that you think teachers don’t do multiple times in a day at school?

The only time a teacher sees money in his account is at the end of the month 28 plus days and the money   hehehe. How do we survive?

Our whole life is the work itself. We work 24hrs a day don’t be deceived.

All we need,

Better Conditions of service, just like the other work force.

To cut everything short, increase our salaries and give us allowances

  1. Increment in Salary
  2. Transport allowance to all teachers,
