ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

 

GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR PhD. PROGRAMMES (Local Applicants)

Applicants should:

  1. Possess Researched Master’s Degree in the relevant field of study from an accredited institution.
  2. Obtain Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or above in the course offered at the Master’s level.
  3. Have at lea ast grade “B” in the thesis/dissertation presented for the Master’s degree.
  4. Submit a research proposal of not less than 3000 words.
  5. Pass a selection interview.
  • Applicants who wish to offer PhD in Mathematics Education and Ph.D. in Science Education must hold Researched Master’s degree in Mathematics Education and Science Education respectively.

GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR Ph.D. PROGRAMMES (International Applicants)

Applicants should:

  1. Possess a researched-based Master’s degree not below a 3.0 GPA from any recognised university in related field of study.
  2. Demonstration of English competencies from an institution that conducted instruction in English or an equivalent of 100 and above TOEFL scores.
  3. Computer literacy demonstrated by ease of use of Microsoft applications, Google applications and at least one data analytic software (e.g. SPSS, NVIVO, MPlus, SAS, LISREL etc.
  4. Three (3) letters of recommendation, with at least one from a person who has been your research supervisor, and one from an instructor.
  5. Writing sample/portfolio
  6. Personal statement
  7. A satisfactory performance of 70% and above in a screening interview organized by the Department.

Ph D. EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP

The general entry requirements for all graduate programmes in the University of Education shall apply

Specific Departmental Requirements

  1. Applicants must possess an M.Phil. (By Research) in relevant area or a cognate field from any accredited institution.
  2. They must have obtained a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 or higher in the Master’s degree.
  3. They must complete an application procedure that includes a statement of purpose and an understanding of research objective for terminal degree studies.
  4. They must pass a selection interview organized by the Department of Educational Administration and Management.
  5. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate potential for research through the writing of a research proposal.
  6. The general regulations governing entry requirements of University of Education, Winneba (UEW) (School of Graduate Studies) shall apply.

Note: Foreign degrees must be accompanied with its interpretation from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.

Ph D. COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY

 

An applicant must have:

A research-based master’s degree with GPA of not below 3.0 from an accredited University in Counselling Psychology or related field of study. (E.g Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Social work, and Nursing and Psychiatry)
Three letters of recommendation, with at least one from a person who has been your research supervisor, and one from an instructor.
Writing sample/portfolio.
Personal statement
English language competency at the global undergraduate level demonstrated in oral interview
A satisfactory performance of 70% and above in a screening interview organized by the Department

Ph D. MUSIC

 

Applicants must hold MPhil degree in music from UEW or any accredited University to be admitted onto the programme. In addition, applicants must pass a selection interview.

Admission Procedure:

Candidates must demonstrate competence or potential in: (1) analytical skills for music of various literatures including African Music, (2) the history of music theory and musical styles, (3) bibliography and (4) research techniques. Candidates must submit an acceptable research proposal/creative work(s) for which supervision is available.
Application must be accompanied by:
Option I: For candidates by thesis: A written research proposal.
Option II: For candidates by creative works and thesis: A written explanation of the cohesive structure between their choice and the thesis that shall include (i) a portfolio of completed compositions (scores, videos, electronic files, etc.); (ii) an outline of the proposed work/works and (iii) a research proposal.
Option III: For candidates by performance and thesis: A written explanation of the cohesive structure between their choice and the thesis that shall include (i) a portfolio of repertoire (videos, electronic files, etc.); (ii) the proposed programme of performances and (iii) a research proposal. The intending candidate will be required to audition with a recital programme of at least forty-five minutes duration, and which will include at least one large-scale work in the following areas: Piano, Voice, Winds, Strings, African Instruments, Dance and Percussion. The first recital, which serves as a qualifying recital, must be held, during the selection interview.

Ph D. ENGLISH

Applicants to be admitted into the PhD programme of the department of English must possess a research master’s degree from a recognised university discipline as indicated below for the respective tracks:

  1. Language Track – Research Master’s in English, Linguistics.
  2. Literature Track – Research Master’s in Literature, creative writing, Theatre Studies.
  3. Pedagogy Track – Research Master’s in English, Linguistics, English as a second Language, Basic Education, Early childhood, Curriculum Studies with relevant specialisation. Applicants must have undertaken studies in Education at the tertiary level.

NB: This programme is three (3) years (6 semesters).

Ph D. FRENCH

The Applicant must:

  1. A good postgraduate research Master’s degree in French with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  2. Submit a research proposal of about 3000 words
  3. Pass an interview.

Ph D. APPLIED LINGUISTICS

Applicants must:

  1. Have MPhil in language, linguistics and related discipline with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) with 3.0 or better from any recognised University.
  2. Attend and pass a selection interview.

Ph D. ARTS AND CULTURE

Applicants must hold: MPhil in Arts & Culture/ MPhil in Music/ MFA/MPhil in Theatre Arts/ MPhil in Visual Communication from UEW or any accredited University to be admitted onto the programme. In addition, applicants must pass a selection interview.

Ph D. SCIENCE EDUCATION

Applicant must possess:

  1. M. Phil. in science Education from University of Education, Winneba or any recognised University.
  2. M. Phil. in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Integrated Science and Science related programmes from a recognised university.
  3. M.Sc. in related sciences with research (with an education component/ postgraduate diploma in education or its equivalent) from a recognised university.
  4. Must pass a selection interview.

Ph D. COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDIES

PhD in Communication and Media Studies with options in the following areas of specialization.

  1. Communication Instruction
  2. Strategic Communication
  3. Development Communication
  4. Journalism and Media studies

Entry requirements for admission of students

  • A researched Master’s Degree (MPhil) in Communication and Media Studies or Communication related fields of study from an accredited institution.
  • A researched Master’s Degree (MPhil) in other disciplines.
  • A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 or above in the courses offered at the Master’s degree level.
  • At least grade ‘B’ in the dissertation/thesis presented for the Master’s degree.

    e) Candidates are required to pass an interview (to be determined by the selection Committee) before being admitted.

PhD. MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

Graduate students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Research Master’s degree (MPhil) in Mathematics Education
  2. Master’s degree (M.Sc./M.A) in Mathematics
  3. Master’s degree (M.Ed.) in Mathematics Education
  4. MPhil/MEd thesis grade should be B and above or have evidence of a research publication in a reputable Journal.
  5. Pass an interview.
  6. Provide an academic transcript.

PhD./Ed.D. SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION

The Applicant must:

  1. Possess M.Phil. or Research Master’s Degree in Social Studies or related fields such as Economics, Geography, History, Political Science and Sociology.
  2. Submit a research proposal on the topic he/she intends to study.
  3. Attend an interview to assess his/her suitability for the programme.
  4. In addition, the applicant’s working experience in teaching, research, publication and community service will be an added advantage.
  5. Admission will also be based on the suitability of the research proposal and the availability of supervisors in the research area to supervise the applicant.

Note: The programme is meant to last for a minimum of three (3) years (FOR FULL-TIME CANDIDATES) and five (5) years (FOR PART-TIME CANDIDATES).

Ph D. SPECIAL EDUCATION

A candidate seeking admission into higher degree or graduate diploma in the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) shall normally be:

  1. A graduate of the UEW or of other public universities recognised by the Academic Board of the UEW.
  2. A person who holds a relevant professional qualification approved by the Academic Board, on recommendation of the Graduate Board.
  3. A candidate may be required, as a condition for admission, to undergo such tests as may be prescribed by the Department concerned with his/her proposed work or to take such other pre-requisite or concurrent studies and examinations as may be prescribed, subject to the overall control of the Board.
  4. A candidate with a Research Master’s Degree from UEW or from other recognised public universities may be admitted to the Ph.D degree programme.

Admission into the programme shall be based on these criteria

  1. A candidate with a researched Master’s degree from UEW or of other recognized public Universities may be admitted to a Doctoral degree programme.
  2. A candidate may be offered admission to pursue a postgraduate programme of study either full-time basis or by Distance learning or Sandwich. Full-time admission can be offered only to candidates who satisfy the School of Graduate Studies that they are not in full-time employment, that they have been released by their employers to undertake full-time studies
  3. A candidate may be required as a condition for admission to undergo such tests as may be prescribed by the Department of Special Education with his/her proposed work or to take such other pre-requisite or concurrent studies and examinations as may be prescribed, subject to the overall control of the School of Graduate Studies Board.

Additionally, the candidate must satisfy these departmental requirements:

  1. A candidate must have a researched MPhil/MSc/Med degree in the relevant discipline Department Requirements. Candidates who possess a B. Ed. In Special Education with M.A. in Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Administration and Planning, or any relevant discipline may apply.
  2. An academic transcript of the Master’s degree shall be required.
  3. A candidate must have obtained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above (or equivalent grade) in the course work component of the Master’s thesis.
  4. Where a candidate’s Master’s degree does not include course work, recommendation for admission shall be based on the School of Graduate Studies Board’s assessment of his/her MPhil/MSc/MEd thesis.
  5. A candidate should, in addition to the application, submit
  6. Not more than a four-page proposal defining the area of interest, brief description of any previous study conducted on the subject and justification for the study.
  7. Names of three (3) referees, two of whom should conversant the applicant’s academic work.
  8. Qualified candidates shall be invited for an interview by a panel in the Department.
  9. In exceptional cases, a candidate’s Post Master’s research experience shall be considered.

M.PHIL. ECONOMICS EDUCATION

Applicants must:

To be enrolled in the programme, prospective applicants are expected to have good first degrees (at least, Second Class Lower Division) in Economics or related programmes that are quantitative in nature (mathematics and engineering) at the tertiary level of education from recognized universities. Also, the applicant must attend and pass a selection interview.

M.PHIL. ENGLISH

Candidates are required to provide the following:

  1. Regular
  1. Evidence of a good class with a minimum of second class (Lower division) from any recognised university. Candidates should have a B.A. (English) or B.Ed. (English).
  2. Applicants must attend and pass a selection interview.
  3. Candidates must provide supporting documents such as certificates, academic transcripts, project work/thesis and two (2) referees’ reports.
    1. M.Phil English-Top-Up
  1. Candidates must have an M.A. or M. Ed in English from any recognised university.
  2. Candidates must attend and pass a selection interview and show evidence of having written a thesis.
  3. A candidate’s GPA must not fall below 3.0
  4. Candidates must provide supporting documents such as certificates, academic transcripts, project work/thesis and two (2) referees’ reports.

NB: This programme is two (2) years (4 semesters) for Regular applicants and one (1) year (2 Semesters) for Top-Up applicants

M. PHIL. GHANAIAN LANGUAGE STUDIES

  1. To be admitted into the M.Phil. in Ghanaian Language Studies degree programme, the candidate must have obtained a first degree (First Class or a Second Class Division) from the University of Education, Winneba or any recognized university where the Ghanaian Language the applicant has chosen to study, has been done at the first-degree level.
  2. Candidates are to attend and pass the University’s selection interview.

M. PHIL. FRENCH EDUCATION

Applicants should possess:

  1. A good Bachelor’s Degree in French, preferably second class lower or better from an accredited university.
  2. Attend and pass the University’s selection interview.
  3. Third class applicant must pass an entrance examination and an interview.
  4. Work experience of three (3) years after the attainment of a 3rd class degree would be an advantage.
  5. M.Ed. in French or M.A. (translation) with cumulative GPA of 3.0 are eligible for 1 year Top Up.

M. PHIL. APPLIED LINGUISTICS

Applicants should:

  1. Provide evidence of a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in language or linguistics and related discipline from any recognised University.
  2. Attend and pass a selection interview.

M. PHIL. TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Applicants:

  1. Must possess a good first degree in any language with a Second Class Lower Division or better from any recognised university.
  2. Must be an English teacher in addition to (i) above.
  3. Must attend and pass a selection interview.

M.PHIL. EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT

Applicants must:

  1. Possess a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) from the University of Education, Winneba or other Universities recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba or from any institution accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.
  2. Possess a good honours (Second Class Lower Division or better) in disciplines other than education and must obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalence before applying.

M.PHIL. EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

Applicants must:

  1. Possess a good first degree, (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Early Childhood Education, Basic Education, Special Education, Counselling Psychology/Counselling Psychology from the University of Education, Winneba or a recognised university.
  2. Be computer literate.
  3. NB: In addition to the above stated requirements, applicants should have qualification in Educational Studies (Diploma in Education or better).
  4. Pass a selection interview.

M.PHIL. BASIC EDUCATION

Applicant must:

  1. Possess a Bachelor’s degree (not below Second Class Lower Division) in Basic Education from University of Education, Winneba or recognised university.
  2. Be a former University of Education product who in addition to their diploma in Basic Education have a good Bachelor’s degree (not below Second Class Lower division) in Humanities or the Sciences.
  3. Possess a Bachelor’s degree (not below Second Class Lower Division) with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from a recognised university.
  4. Possess M. Ed. or equivalent qualifications with relevant course content.
  5. Possess a good Bachelor’s degree (not below Second Class Lower Division) in any field of study and a Diploma in Education.
  6. Pass a selection interview.

M. PHIL. SPECIAL EDUCATION

Applicant must possess:

  1. Bachelor’s degree (not below Second Class Lower Division) in Special Education.
  2. A professional qualification approved by the academic Board as being equivalent to a good Bachelor’s degree. The professional qualification must be in Special Education, Community-Based Rehabilitation Studies etc. into which admission is sought.
  3. A good Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline/profession such as nursing etc. from a recognised public university.
  4. An academic transcript shall be required for the admission.
  5. Candidates must pass a selection interview.

M.PHIL. CHEMISTRY EDUCATION

Applicants should possess:

  1. A good first degree in Chemistry from the University of Education, Winneba.
  2. A good first degree in Chemistry (with and education component) from a recognised university.
  3. A good first degree in Chemistry from a recognised university and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalent.
  1. Former product of University of Education, Winneba with Diploma in Science Education in addition to BSc in Chemistry from recognised university are eligible to apply.
  2. Applicants must pass the selection interview.

M.PHIL. SCIENCE EDUCATION

Applicants should possess:

  1. A good first degree in the Sciences with an Education component from a recognised University.
  2. A good first degree in the Sciences from a recognised University and a postgraduate diploma in education or its equivalent.
  3. A good first degree in the Sciences from recognised universities and Diploma in Science Education from University of Education, Winneba.

M.PHIL. BIOLOGY EDUCATION

Applicants possessing the following qualifications may be admitted to the Master of Philosophy Biology Education:

  1. A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Biology Education from any recognised University.
  2. A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Biology (with an Education component) from a recognised University.
  3. A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Biology or related area such as Botany, Zoology or Environmental Science from a recognised University with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalent.
  4. Candidates are required to pass a selection interview.

M.PHIL. BIOLOGY

  1. A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Biology Education from any recognised University.
  2. A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Biology (with or without an Education component) from a recognised University.
  3. A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Biology or related area such as Botany, Zoology or Environmental Science from a recognised University with or without a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalent.
  4. Candidates are required to pass a selection interview.

M.PHIL. FOOD AND NUTRITION

A candidate seeking admission into this programme shall be required to obtain a B.Ed. Home Economics degree (with a foundation in Food and Nutrition) or BSc. Home Economics Education (with a foundation in Food and Nutrition) from the University of Education, Winneba or an institution recognized by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba with a grading not below Second Class Lower Division. Candidates with B.A. or B.Sc Home Economics/Home Science/Family and Consumer Science with a foundation in Food and Nutrition or Catering and Hospitality from any other University recognized by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba should in addition to their Bachelor’s degree have a Diploma in Education or Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Applicant must also attend and pass selection interview.

M.PHIL. FAMILY LIFE MANAGEMENT EDUCATION

A candidate seeking admission into this programme shall be required to obtain:

  1. B. Ed./BSc. Home Economics Education from the University of Education, Winneba or any institution recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba, with grading not below Second Class Lower Division.
  2. Candidates with B. A. or BSc. Home Economics/Home Science/Family and Consumer Science/Catering and Hospitality from any other university recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba should in addition have a Diploma in Education or Postgraduate Diploma in Education.
  3. Candidates are required to pass an interview organised by the Department.

M.PHIL. CLOTHING AND TEXTILES

A candidate seeking admission into this programme should have obtained:

  1. A B.Ed. Home Economics (Clothing and Textiles) degree with a grading not below a Second Class Lower.
  2. A BSc. Degree in Home Economics Education from University of Education, Winneba with a grading not below Second Class Lower..
  3. BSc. Home Science, Family and Consumer Science (Clothing and Textiles) or an equivalent qualification from any other university recognised by the Academic Board of University of Education, Winneba with a grading not below Second Class Lower.
  4. B.Tech. Fashion and Textiles with grade B or CGPA of 3.0 or better.
  5. Candidates with M.Ed. in Home Economics (Clothing and Textiles) M.Tech. Fashion Design and Textiles should have grade B or CGPA of 3.0 or better.

M. PHIL. HUMAN RIGHTS, PEACE AND CONFLICT STUDIES

The entry requirements for admission of students

The following are eligible to apply for admission as candidates for the Master of Philosophy in Human Rights, Conflict and Peace Studies programme:

  1. A Graduate with a good first degree in any social science discipline from a recognised institution.
  2. Persons who hold relevant professional qualifications equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree.
  3. Members of recognised professional institutions like the Police Service, Prisons Service, Ghana Education Service, Immigration Service, Ports and Harbours, Armed Forces, Health Services and the District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies who have a Bachelor’s degree.
  4. Candidates meeting the requirements stipulated in regulations (i) to (iii) must also meet other conditions or requirements as may be prescribed by the Graduate Board.
  5. Notwithstanding regulations (i) to (iii) above, a candidate may be required as a condition for admission to attend and pass an interview conducted by the Centre for Conflict, Human Rights, and Peace Studies.
  6. Submit a detailed proposal of intended research.

NB: The duration for the programme is two (2) years (4 Sessions).

M.PHIL. GEOGRAPHY WITH EDUCATION

Applicants should:

  1. Possess Second class lower or better in Geography or any related discipline.
  2. Pass the selection interview.

M. PHIL. ARTS AND CULTURE

Applicants must:

Applicants must have first degree (not less than second class division) in Arts & Culture/ Music/Theatre Arts/ Visual Communication from UEW or any accredited University to be admitted onto the programme. Applicants who hold MA in these disciplines may be considered for a one year top up. Applicants must also pass a selection interview.

M. PHIL. THEATRE ARTS

Applicants possessing the following qualifications may be admitted into the M. Phil. Theatre Arts programme:

  1. A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Theatre Arts from any recognised university.
  2. A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in any related programme in the Performing Arts.

MFA THEATRE ARTS

  1. A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Theatre Arts from any recognised University.
  2. A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in any related programme in the Performing Arts.
  3. Applicants should attend and pass an interview organised by the Department in addition to (i) and (ii) above.

M. A. THEATRE ARTS

Applicants possessing the following qualifications may be admitted into the M FA in Theatre Arts programme:

  1. A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Theatre Arts from any recognised university.
  2. A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in any related programme in the Performing Arts.
  3. Applicants should attend and pass an interview organised by the Department in addition to (i) and (ii) above.

M. PHIL. ART EDUCATION

A good first degree in relevant art disciplines (studio art, art education, and design or art history) from recognized tertiary institution (minimum of second class lower division). Minimum average of a ‘B’ in MA. Art Education programme. Interview will also be conducted for qualified applicants.

M.PHIL. MUSIC

Applicants must have first degree (not less than second class division) in music from UEW or any accredited tertiary institution. Applicants who hold MA in music from the University of Education may be considered for a one year top up. Applicants must also pass a selection interview. In addition, candidates must submit an acceptable research proposal/creative work(s) for which supervision is available.

Application must be accompanied by:

Option I: For candidates by thesis: A written research proposal.

Option II: For candidates by creative work and thesis: A written explanation of the cohesive structure between their choice and the thesis that shall include(i) a portfolio of completed compositions/studio works/theatrical works (scores, videos, electronic files, etc.); (ii) an outline of the proposed work/works and (iii) a research proposal.

M.PHIL. TEXTILES AND FASHION EDUCATION

Applicants must hold a relevant Bachelor’s degree (First and Second class is preferable). All applicants must attend and pass selection interviews organized. Applicants with Third Class shall go through interview in addition to entrance examination in research. Applicants who hold M A or M.Tech. in the field may be considered for one year top-up for the MPhil Degree. In the case of top up, applicants with no Pedagogical competencies shall do all courses that satisfy such competencies. Applicants must demonstrate competence or potential in analytical skills in the various literatures in the Textiles and Fashion including theory and practice, bibliography and techniques. In addition, candidates must submit an acceptable research proposal/creative work(s) for which supervision is available. Application must be accompanied by written research proposal and or a portfolio of completed studio works (non-electronic and or electronic portfolios such as videos, still images).

M.PHIL. VISUAL COMMUNICATION STUDIES

To qualify to undertake the MPhil in Visual Communication Studies programme in the Department of Graphic Design, prospective candidates will be expected to possess one of the following categories of entry requirements:

  1. A good first degree in relevant disciplines from a recognized tertiary institution (minimum of second-class lower division). All candidates are required to submit an online portfolio of work to be assessed by the programmes’ staff team.
  2. Minimum average of a ‘B’ in M.A. Communication Design/M.A. Visual Communication/ M.A. Art Education/ M.A. Arts and Culture/ M.A. Media and Communication/ M.A. Graphic Design/ its equivalent

All applicants must pass a selection interview to be considered for admission.

M.PHIL. DEVELOPMENT FINANCE

  1. Applicants must have a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in any academic discipline from a recognised institution.
  2. Foreign applicants with academic qualifications equivalent to and certified by the Ghana Tertiary Commission may apply for admission.
  3. Applicants with MBA/MSc. degree in any related field may apply.
  4. All applicants must pass a competitive selection interview to be considered for admission.

M.PHIL. INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION

  1. A good Bachelor’s degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Information Technology Education, Information and Communication Technology Education or Computer Science Education or a related discipline from a recognised university.

OR

  1. A good Bachelor’s degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Information Technology, Information and Communication Technology or Computer Science. Such applicants upon admission shall audit a number of foundation courses in education and instructional technology.
  2. Applicants with M. Ed. in ICT could be enrolled to do a one-year top-up programme to get the M. Phil.
  3. Applicants with one year MSc. in ICT/Computer Science may enrol into this programme.
  4. Applicants must also submit a proposal (500-600 words, double-spaced) that addresses the applicant’s career goals, teaching experience, teaching philosophy, prior experience using ICT, and views on the role of ICT in enhancing education and training.

M.PHIL. FINANCE

Qualified applicants are:

  1. Applicants have a good first degree (at least a Second Class Lower Division) in finance or related field of study from a recognised University.
  2. Foreign applicants with academic qualifications equivalent to and certified by the National Accreditation Board may apply for admission.
  3. Applicants must have MBA/MSc. degree in Finance or any related field with a pass.
  4. All applicants must pass a competitive selection interview to be considered for admission.

M.PHIL. ACCOUNTING

Applicant must:

  1. Have at least a second class (lower division) honours degree in Accounting from a recognised or accredited University.
  2. Applicants must pass a selection interview.

OR

The applicant must:

  1. Be a member of a recognised professional body such as Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA), Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Chartered Institute of Taxation Ghana (CITG) and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
  2. Have at least three years of post- qualification experience.
  3. Pass a selection interview.

    M.PHIL HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

    Candidates must:

    1. Have obtained a good first degree with at least a second class division in Human Resource Management or in any Management related programme from a recognized University.
    2. Submit an official transcript of academic record.
    3. Pass a selection interview.

M.PHIL. PROCUREMENT AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Candidates must:

  1. Have obtained a good first degree (at least a second class division) in a relevant field of study from a recognized university.
  2. Submit an official transcript of academic record.
  3. Submit at least two referee reports, one of whom must be from a former Lecturer.
  4. Submit a 2-3 page proposal on intended area of study.
  5. Pass a selection interview.
  6. Satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the School of Business.

M.PHIL. ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATIONS MANAGEMENT

Candidates must:

  1. Have obtained a good first degree (at least a second class division) in a relevant field of study from a recognized university.
  2. Submit an official transcript of academic record.
  3. Submit at least two referee reports, one of whom must be from a former Lecturer.
  4. Submit a 2-3 page proposal on intended area of study.
  5. Pass a selection interview.
  6. Satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the School of Business

M. A. / M.PHIL. JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES

a. Master of Philosophy/Master of Arts in Journalism and Media Studies (Regular/Weekend)

  1. Applicants into the M.A in Journalism and Media Studies must have Bachelor’s Degree from any discipline, and should have obtained a class not lower than Second Class Lower division.
  2. Should pass a selection interview.
  3. Applicants who obtain a GPA of 3.0 or better at the M.A coursework and are desirous of pursuing the M.Phil. Journalism and Media Studies programme are given the opportunity to apply internally for consideration and transition.

b. Master of Philosophy (Top-Up) in Journalism and Media Studies

The M.Phil in Journalism and Media Studies programme is a one (1) year Top-Up programme for applicants with Master’s Degree in Communication and have a GPA of 3.0 or better.

M. A. /M.PHIL. STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION

a. Master of Philosophy/Master of Arts in Strategic Communication (Regular/Weekend)

  1. Applicants into the M.A in Strategic Communication must have Bachelor’s Degree from any discipline, and should have obtained a class not lower than Second Class Lower division.
  2. Should pass a selection interview.
  3. Applicants who obtain a GPA of 3.0 or better at the M.A coursework and are desirous of pursuing the M.Phil. Strategic Communication programme are given the opportunity to apply internally for consideration and transition.

b. Master of Philosophy (Top-Up) in Strategic Communication

The M.Phil in Strategic Communication programme is a one (1) year Top-Up programme for applicants with Master’s Degree in Communication and have a GPA of 3.0 or better.

M. A. /M.PHIL. DEVELOPMENT COMMUNICATION

a. Master of Philosophy/Master of Arts in Development Communication (Regular/Weekend)

  1. Applicants into the M.A in Development Communication must have Bachelor’s Degree from any discipline, and should have obtained a class not lower than Second Class Lower division.
  2. Should pass a selection interview.
  3. Applicants who obtain a GPA of 3.0 or better at the M.A coursework and are desirous of pursuing the M.Phil. Development Communication programme are given the opportunity to apply internally for consideration and transition.

b. Master of Philosophy (Top-Up) in Development Communication

The M.Phil in Development Communication programme is a one (1) year Top-Up programme for applicants with Master’s Degree in Communication and have a GPA of 3.0 or better.

M. A. /M.PHIL. COMMUNICATION INSTRUCTION

a. Master of Philosophy/Master of Arts in Communication Instruction (Regular/Weekend)

  1. Applicants into the M.A in Communication Instruction must have Bachelor’s Degree from any discipline, and should have obtained a class not lower than Second Class Lower division.
  2. Should pass a selection interview.
  3. Applicants with preference for programmes in the Department of Communication Instruction must have a background in language study; preferably, the English language programme at the bachelor’s level.
  4. Applicants who obtain a GPA of 3.0 or better at the M.A coursework and are desirous of pursuing the M.Phil. Communication Instruction programme are given the opportunity to apply internally for consideration and transition.

Master of Philosophy (Top-Up) in Communication Instruction

The M.Phil in Communication and Media Studies programmme is a one (1) year Top-Up programme for applicants with Master’s Degree in Communication and have a GPA of 3.0 or better.

M.PHIL. POLITICAL SCIENCE EDUCATION

To be admitted to the Postgraduate programme in M. Phil. Political Science Education, candidates must possess a good first degree in Political Science major or B. A. Social Sciences with Political Science option or B. A. Development Studies with Political Science option in related discipline.

  1. Candidates applying for the programme should have Political Science major (First degree) or combined Political Science with another subject and must have attained at least a Second-Class Lower Division.
  2. Candidates with M.Ed. Political Science from a recognised University may apply. Such applicants may be required to take additional course in addition to completing a full research thesis/dissertation within one year.
  3. Applicants will have pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department.

M. PHIL. HISTORY EDUCATION

To be admitted to the postgraduate programme in History Education, candidates must possess a good first degree in History or B. A. Social Sciences with History option.

  1. Candidates applying for the programme should have History Major (First degree) or combined History with another subject, and must have attained at least a Second Class Lower Division.
  2. Candidates with M. Ed. History from a recognised University may also apply. Such a candidate may be required to take additional courses in addition to completing a full research thesis within one year.
  3. Applicants will have to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department.

M.PHIL. SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION

 

The following are eligible to apply for admission as candidates for the Master of Philosophy programme in Social Studies Education:

  1. A good Bachelor’s degree (Second Class Lower or better) in Social Studies or relevant field of study (Geography, Economics, History, Political Science, Development Studies, etc) from a recognised university.
  2. A person who holds a relevant professional qualification approved by the Academic Board.
  3. Notwithstanding regulations (a) and (b) above, a candidate may be required as a condition for admission to undergo such tests as may be prescribed by the Department with his proposed work or take such other pre-requisite or concurrent studies and examinations as may be prescribed, subject to overall control of the Board.
  4. Applicants must pass a selection interview before they will be admitted.

M. PHIL. PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS STUDIES

  1. A good Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education/Sports Coaching (e.g. B.Ed., BSc.) with at least a Second Class Lower from a recognised university in a relevant field to Physical Education/Sports Coaching.
  2. Applicants with M.Ed. or equivalent qualification in Physical Education/Sports Education would be determined either to complete the M.Phil. Programme within two (2) or four semesters during the interview.
  3. Applicants must pass an interview.

M. PHIL. MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

There are two categories of candidates.

Category 1: First Degree Holders

First degree holders must

  1. Have a good Bachelor’s degree not below Second Class Lower Division in Mathematics Education or mathematics.
  2. Have a professional qualification approved by the Academic Board as being equivalent to a good bachelor’s degree in the discipline.

    (c) Pass an interview

    (d) Provide an academic transcript

    Category 2: Masters of Education (M.Ed.) Candidates

    For M.Ed. degree holders:

  • The M. Ed. Degrees must be in Mathematics Education
  • They must pass an interview conducted by the University
  • They must provide an academic transcript.

M. PHIL. COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY

An applicant must have:

  1. A bachelor’s degree with GPA of not below 2.5 from an accredited University in Counselling Psychology or related field of study. (E.g Psychology, Guidance and counselling, social work, and nursing and psychiatry)
  2. Applicants in non-counselling psychology fields could be considered subject upon current population they serve and contingent upon their mastery over oral and written English.
  3. English language competency at the global undergraduate level demonstrated in oral interview and written exams.
  4. Computer literacy demonstrated by ease of use OF word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
  5. Computer literacy demonstrated by ease of use OF sending and receiving email and other digital communication.
  6. A purpose statement documenting instances of counselling related supports, and how the programme can enhance these skills of help communities near and far
  7. A satisfactory performance of 70% and above in a screening interview organized by the Department

M. PHIL. CURRICULUM AND PEDAGOGIC STUDIES

The following are eligible to apply for admission as candidates for the Master of Philosophy (Curriculum and Pedagogic Studies) programme:

  1. Graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in Education not below Second Class Lower division, from an accredited institution.
  2. Graduates with good first degree in disciplines outside Education, plus a Post-graduate Diploma in Education from an accredited institution.
  3. Notwithstanding regulations (1), (2), above, a candidate may be required as a condition for admission to undergo such assessments or take such other pre-requisite or concurrent studies and examinations as may be prescribed by the Department, subject to overall approval of the Graduate Board.
  4. Candidates must pass a selection interview.

1-YEAR TOP-UP TO M.PHIL PROGRAMMES

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED. TO M.PHIL. EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT

  1. Applicants must:
  1. Possess an M. Ed. (Educational Administration and Management) degree with G.P.A. of NOT LESS THAN 3.0 from University of Education, Winneba or any other University recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba; or from any institution accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.
  1. Pass the selection interview.
  1. Note: Foreign degrees must be accompanied with its interpretation from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL. IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

must:

  1. Possess an M. Ed./M. A./MSc. in Special Education with a G.P.A. of not less than 3.0.
  2. Pass a selection interview.
  3. An academic transcript shall be required for admission.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED. TO M.PHIL COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY

  1. A master’s degree with GPA of not below 3.0 from an accredited University in Guidance and Counselling or related field of study. (E.g Psychology, Guidance and counselling, social work, and nursing and psychiatry)
  2. English language competency at the global undergraduate level demonstrated in oral interview and written exams.

  4. A purpose statement documenting current counselling related activities in the workplace, and/or counselling related activities in the community. Students will also be expected to document how the Top Up programme will contribute to current activities, while projecting how an in-depth understanding of research will enhance students personally and professionally.
  5. A satisfactory performance of 70% and above in a screening interview organized by the Department.

1-YEAR TOP-UP PROGRAMME FROM M.A. TO M.PHIL GHANAIAN LANGUAGE STUDIES

  1. The candidate must hold an M. A. degree from the University of Education, Winneba or any recognized university in which the Ghanaian Language chosen for the Top-Up M.Phil. programme, has been studied for the M. A. degree.
  2. The candidate must have obtained a minimum grade point of 3.0 in the requisite certificate for the application.
  3. The candidate will have to pass the University’s selection interview.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A./M.ED. TO M.PHIL FRENCH

  1. A minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in French from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognised university.
  2. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. in French.
  3. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. French Education Programme.
  1. Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A./M.ED. TO M.PHIL. TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (TESL)

  1. Applicants must possess:
  1. M.A./M.Ed. in TESL or English from any recognised university.
  2. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. in TESL or English.
  1. Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A./M.ED. TO M.PHIL. ENGLISH EDUCATION

  1. A minimum degree of Second Class Lower Division in English from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognised university.
  2. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. in English.
  3. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. English Education Programme.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED. TO M.PHIL SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION

  2. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.Ed. in Social Studies.

1-YEAR TOP-UP PROGRAMME FROM M.A. TO M.PHIL. CONFLICTS, HUMAN RIGHTS AND PEACE STUDIES

 

  1. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A. (Master of Arts) from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognised universities.
  2. A minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in Master of Arts from University of Education, Winneba or other recognised Universities.
  1. Applicants will be required to submit detailed proposal of their intended research, which will be presented with the second year regular M.Phil. (Human Rights) Students.
  2. Applicant(s) must also pass the selection interview.

NB: Applicants with Executive Masters in Human Rights, Conflict and Peace Studies must have completed the M.A Dissertation/Thesis.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A./M.ED. TO M.PHIL. GHANAIAN LANGUAGES STUDIES.

  1. Applicants must possess:
  1. A minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in any of the Ghanaian Languages Education from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognised university.
  2. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A. in Ghanaian Language Studies.
  1. Applicants with M.A. in Ghanaian Language (which the applicant has chosen to study) with courses in Linguistics can also apply.
  2. Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED. TO M.PHIL. GEOGRAPHY WITH EDUCATION

  1. Applicants must possess C.G.P.A. of not less than 2.5 from M.Ed (Geography) programme from University of Education, Winneba.
  2. Pass a selection interview at the Departmental level.
  3. Applicants will be required to submit a detailed proposal of their intended research, which will be presented with the second year regular M.Phil. (Geography with Education) students.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A. TO M.PHIL. HISTORY EDUCATION

  1. Applicants must possess C.G.P.A. of not less than 2.5 from M.Ed (History) programme from University of Education, Winneba and other recognised universities.
  2. Pass a selection interview at the Departmental level.
  3. Applicants will be required to submit a detailed proposal of their intended research, which will be presented with the second year regular M.Phil. (History with Education) students.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL. SCIENCE EDUCATION

  1. Applicants must possess C.G.P.A. of not less than 2.5 from M.Ed. (Science Education or other related areas from University of Education, Winneba and other recognised universities.
  2. Pass a selection interview at the Departmental level.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL. MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

The candidate must:

  1. Possess Master of Education (M. Ed.) in Mathematics
  2. Provide an academic transcript.
  3. Pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED./M.A./M.TECH. TO M.PHIL. FOOD AND NUTRITION

A candidate with 12 calendar months/two sandwich sessions of MA or M. Ed or M. Tech programme in Home Economics/Home Science/Catering and related areas can be admitted to pursue the MPhil Home Economics (Food and Nutrition). Such candidates may be required to complete the programme in 12 calendar months.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED./M.A./M.TECH. TO M.PHIL. FAMILY LIFE MANAGEMENT EDUCATION

  1. Applicants who possess M. A. or M. Ed. or M. Tech. (with 12 calendar months/two sandwich sessions of programme) in Home Economics/Home Science can be admitted to pursue M. Phil. in Home Economics (Family Life Management Education).
  2. Such candidates in (i) may be required to complete the programme in twelve (12) calendar months.
  3. Applicants must pass a selection interview to be organised by the Department.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED./M.A./M.TECH. TO M.PHIL. CLOTHING AND TEXTILES

  1. Candidates with M. Ed. in Home Economics (Clothing and Textiles), M. Tech. Fashion Design and Textiles should have grade B or CGPA of 3.0 or better.
  2. A candidate with 12 calendar months/two sandwich sessions of M. A. or M.Ed. or M. Tech. programme in Home Economics/Home Science (Clothing and Textiles /Fashion option) and related areas can be admitted to pursue the M. Phil. Home Economics (Clothing and Textiles). Such candidates in (i) may be required to complete the programme in twelve (12) calendar months.
  3. Applicants must pass a selection interview to be organised by the Department.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A/ M.ED. TO M.PHIL. POLITICAL SCIENCE

  1. Candidates must possess a good first degree in Political Science or in a related Discipline.
  2. Candidates should attain 2nd Class lower Division or better.
  3. Candidates with M.A. or M. Ed in Political Science or related areas from recognised university can also apply.
  4. Applicants must possess C.G.P.A. of not less than 2.5 from M.Ed/M.A (Political Science) programme from University of Education, Winneba and other recognised universities.
  5. Applicants will have to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department.

1-YEAR TOP-UP – M. ED./MA TO M. PHIL. MUSIC

Applicants must:

  1. Possess M. A. in Music from the University of Education.

  1. Possess M. A. in Arts and Culture/Music/Theatre Arts/Visual/Visual Communication from the University of Education, Winneba, or any accredited university.
  2. Pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department.

MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (TOP-UP) IN:

  1. JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES
  2. STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION
  3. DEVELOPMENT COMMUNICATION
  4. COMMUNICATION INSTRUCTION

The M.Phil. in Journalism and Media Studies, Strategic Communication, Development Communication and Communication Instruction in a-d above are one (1) year Top-Up programmes for applicants with Master’s Degree in Communication and have a GPA of 3.0 or better.

MBA WEEKEND PROGRAMMES

MBA – ACCOUNTING OPTION

To be eligible for Admission, applicants must meet any of the following entry requirements:

  1. At least a Second Class (lower division) Honours degree Accounting. Applications may also be considered from graduates in non-business areas with strong practical accounting experience from the industry.
  2. Be a professionally qualified accountant and a member of one of the Accountancy bodies constituting the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).
  3. Have at least one year’s relevant experience in the private or public sector
  4. Pass a selection interview.

MBA – FINANCE OPTION

Applicants must meet any of the following entry requirements:

  1. Applicants must have a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in any academic discipline from a recognised institution.
  2. Applicants with recognised professional qualifications such as CIB, ACCA, and ICAG with a minimum of two (2) years post-qualification working experience may apply for admission.
  3. Applicants with Third Class Division may be considered for admission on grounds of substantial working/professional experience.
  4. Foreign students with academic and professional qualifications equivalent to and certified by the National Accreditation Board may apply for admission.
  5. Applicants must pass a competitive selection interview to be considered for admission.

MBA – MARKETING OPTION

Candidates seeking admission to MBA in marketing must:

  1. Have obtained a good first degree (at least a second class division) in relevant field of study from a recognized university.
  2. Submit an official transcript of academic record.
  3. Submit names of two referees, one of whom must be a former Lecturer.
  4. Satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the School of Business.

MBA – HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT OPTION

Applicants must meet any of the following entry requirements:

  1. Have obtained a good first degree with at least a second class division in Human Resource Management and any other related programme from a recognized University.
  2. Submit an official transcript of academic record.
  3. Pass a selection interview.

MBA – PROCUREMENT SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Candidates seeking admission to MBA in Procurement Supply Chain Management must:

  1. Have obtained a good first degree (at least a second class division) in relevant field of study from a recognized university.
  2. Submit an official transcript of academic record.
  3. Submit names of two referees, one of whom must be a former Lecturer.
  4. Satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the School of Business.

MSC. DEVELOPMENT FINANCE (Sandwich and Weekend Mode)

  1. Applicants must have a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in any academic discipline from a recognised institution.
  2. Applicants with third (3rd) class division may be considered for admission on the grounds of substantial working/ professional experience.
  3. Foreign students with academic and professional qualifications equivalent to and certified by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission may apply for admission.
  4. Applicants must pass a competitive selection interview to be considered for admission.

EXECUTIVE MASTERS IN HUMAN RIGHTS, CONFLICT AND PEACE STUDIES (WEEKEND PROGRAMME)

Candidates seeking admission to the Executive Masters programme need to meet the following requirement:

  1. A good first degree in any discipline from a recognised institution.
  2. Be a Member of recognised professional institution, like the Police Service, Prisons Service, Ghana Education Service, Immigration Service, Ports and Harbour, Armed Forces, Health Services and the District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies who have Senior High School (SHS), Ordinary or Advanced Level Certificate with five or more years working experience.
  3. Pass an interview.

    NB. To qualify for a one year M.Phil Top-Up, the candidate must be a first degree holder and must have completed the Master of Arts (M.A) Dissertation/Thesis.

    The duration of the programme is 2 Sessions (1 Year)

MBA – MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (MIS)

Category A

  1. Possess a Bachelor’s degree with at least a Second Class Division from a recognised university preferably in an Information Technology (IT) related field.

Category B

  1. Candidates with Third Class Honours will be required to write an entrance examination after which they will go through an interview process for admission.
  2. Selection will be done through an interview process.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN TEACHING AND LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION (PGDTLHE) (WEEKENDS)

  1. A beginning lecturer in the University of Education, Winneba.
  2. Lecturers from tertiary institutions who have no formal qualifications in teaching in higher education.
  3. A master’s/ doctorate degree holder who wish to pursue academic career as a teacher in tertiary institutions.

DISTANCE PROGRAMMES

  1. M.Ed English
  2. M.Ed Science
  3. M.Ed Mathematics
  4. M.Ed Institutional Mentorship and Supervision
  5. M.Ed Educational Administration and Management
  6. M.Ed Counseling Psychology
  7. Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR DISTANCE PROGRAMMES

 

Possess a good first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower Division) from the University of Education, Winneba or other Universities recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba or from any institution accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission of Ghana.
Applicants with a good second honours (second class lower or better) degree in other disciplines other than Education are required to obtain a Diploma in Education or its equivalence before applying.
Applicants with 3rd class or Pass in their respective first degrees would be required to pass an interview.

M.Ed Institutional Mentorship and Supervision

And
M.Ed Educational Administration and Management

Or
M.Ed Counseling Psychology

Applicants for a-c above must possess ONE of the following:
A first degree with education component from a recognized University in the specific area and should have taught for at least two years.
A first degree in subject specific area plus Postgraduate Diploma/certificate in Education.

NB. ALL FOREIGN DEGREES MUST BE ACCOMPANIED WITH THEIR INTERPRETATION FROM THE GHANA TERTIARY EDUCATION COMMISSION.
