The UK government holds millions in unclaimed estates belonging to individuals who died, without a will or known heirs. Many of these estates belong to Africans who passed away in the UK, leaving behind assets that could be claimed by relatives.
If you believe you may be entitled to an unclaimed estate, here’s how to check and file a claim.
Unclaimed Estates List
The UK government publishes a daily-updated list of unclaimed estates managed by the Bona Vacantia division (BVD). These estates include properties, bank funds, and other assets that could legally belong to distant relatives.

How to Search the List
- Open the CSV file in Excel, Google Sheets, or another spreadsheet program.
- Use Ctrl+F to search for a surname, country of origin, or other identifying details.
- Check new additions daily, as estates are removed once claimed or after 30 years.
Who Can Claim?
Under UK inheritance law, the following relatives (in order of priority) may be entitled to an estate if there’s no will:
- Spouse or civil partner
- Children, grandchildren, etc.
- Parents
- Siblings (full or half-blood)
- Grandparents
- Uncles, aunts, and cousins
If a closer relative has since passed away, their legal representative (executor or administrator) must claim on their behalf.
