16 NPP Youth Convicted and Fined GH¢2,400 Each for Disrupting UTV Entertainment Show

In a dramatic turn of events on Saturday, October 7, 2023, 16 individuals claiming allegiance to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) descended upon UTV’s studios in Accra. Their mission: to forcefully interrupt the live broadcast of UTV’s popular entertainment show, United Showbiz.

Their brazen intrusion into the television station’s premises resulted in an immediate police response. The owners of UTV, the Despite Media Group, along with the Ministry of Information (MoI), lodged a formal complaint, prompting swift action by law enforcement.

Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of these self-proclaimed NPP sympathizers, who had disrupted the live program.

Following their arraignment at the Achimota Magistrate Court, the group faced charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and rioting.

Surprisingly, they pleaded guilty to the charges, leaving the court with little choice but to convict them based on their own admissions.

The punishment was set at GH¢2,400 for each of the 16 individuals, a hefty fine that serves as a reminder that disrupting public broadcasts comes with legal consequences.”
