Dramatic Rescue: Togolese Man Foiled in Attempted Ritual Killing of Ghanaian Friend

    Watch Video

In a shocking and trending video circulating on social media today, November 19, 2023, a young man referred to as “Togo” is captured attempting to use his Ghanaian friend for money rituals.

The video unfolds as the young man lures his friend, who was engaged in illegal mining (galamsey), to accompany him to a remote location. Little did the Ghanaian friend know, he was being led into a trap where the Togolese man intended to sacrifice him for money rituals, with the assistance of an herbalist known as Baba Haruna.

Fortunately, Baba Haruna, upon learning of the sinister plan, alerted the police, leading to a covert operation. The video captures the harrowing moment when the tied-up Ghanaian friend pleads with his would-be assailant, questioning the motive behind the impending act.

Security agents, without uniforms, to maintain discretion, discreetly infiltrate the secluded area—a mud-built cocoa farm hut. In a swift intervention, they apprehend the Togolese man, who is handed a bag containing an alleged sum of 80,000 Ghana cedis.

The operational video has been widely shared on various social media platforms, showcasing the moment of the arrest. The young man is now in custody, and the motive behind his actions is revealed to be purely financial when questioned.

While some officers contemplated administering physical punishment, others opposed the idea.

    Reactions

Reactions from those who viewed the video express relief at the police intervention, cautioning others to be vigilant about choosing their friends. Many also showered praise on the Ghanaian police for their prompt and effective action.

Gov’t pushing to ban the import of Rice, Fruit juices, fish, yemuadie About 22 Items

The government of Ghana is pushing to establish a regulation that will restrict the importation of what they call strategic products.

This development is set to take place without the Minority’s proposed establishment of a committee by the government to assess the move.

Some items include rice, fruit juices, yemuadie, fish, cement, and some other 17 items.

The attempt to lay the regulation was scuttled by the Minority last Monday.

The NDC side demanded further consultations with the Subsidiary Legislation Committee.

This was despite Trade Minister KT Hammond’s justification to journalists about what exactly the regulation is about and how important it is to the government.

Find the full list of 22 items considered for import restriction below:

    Rice
Guts, bladders, and stomach of animals
    Poultry
    Animal and Vegetable Oil
    Margarine
    Fruit Juices
    Soft Drink
    Mineral Water
    Noodles and Pasta
    Ceramic Tiles
    Corrugated Paper and Paper Board
    Mosquito Coil and Insecticides
    Soaps and Detergents
    Motor Cars
    Iron and Steel
    Cement
    Polymers (Plastics and Plastic Products)
    Fish
    Sugar
    Clothing and Apparel
    Biscuits
    Canned Tomatoes

The country currently spends about US$600 million to import poultry every year.

At the hearing over allegations of dumping of chicken in the country by the Ghana International Trade Commission, the National Chairman of the Poultry Farmers Association, Victor Oppong, said about 600,000 tonnes of frozen chicken were imported into the country every year and sold at cheaper prices, resulting in the near collapse of the domestic poultry market.

“On an annual basis, we receive 600,000 tonnes of frozen chicken, which is made up of 569 million birds valued at $600 million. We are saying that the import is collapsing the poultry industry as well as putting more pressure on the local currency,” Mr Oppong said.

    Rice

In 2018, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie-Akoto, also bemoaned the increasing resort to imports to meet the rice needs of the populace.

He said the development was costing the nation an average of US$1 billion annually.

The value of rice imports rose from US$151 million in 2007 to US$1.16 billion in 2015.
Imports of vegetable oils, toothpicks, pasta, fruit juice, bottled water, ceramic tiles, and other non-critical goods also cost the country similar amounts, leading to the continuous decline in the reserves of the BoG, which leads to the perennial depreciation of the local currency, the cedi.

    BOG

The central bank withdrew the support as part of efforts to maximize the country’s reserves while encouraging domestic production and the consumption of local substitutes.

The decision has been communicated to the lenders electronically.

BoG said in the electronic message that its decision followed a directive by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his October 30 2022 address to the state.

“By the President’s directive issued at his address to the nation on the Ghanaian economy, on October 30, 2022, BoG will no longer provide FX support for the imports of rice, poultry, vegetable oils, toothpicks, pasta, fruit juice, bottled water, ceramic tiles, and other non-critical goods.

“Please be advised and act accordingly,” the central bank said.

Belmont University student shot Update Today

Belmont University students and staff, as well as members of the Nashville community, gathered at a prayer vigil Wednesday for Jillian Ludwig, a New Jersey freshman fighting for her life after she was shot in the head while walking at a park in the Edgehill neighborhood.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, the suspect — identified as 29-year-old Shaquille Taylor — was standing on 13th Court when he opened fire on a car traveling toward Deford Bailey Avenue at approximately 2:24 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

One of Taylor’s bullets reportedly hit 18-year-old Ludwig in the head, causing her to collapse to the ground. However, officials said she was not discovered until 3:30 p.m., when a passerby notified law enforcement.

As of Wednesday, Nov. 8, Ludwig is in “extremely critical condition” at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, authorities reported.

Despite being alerted to the incident via email Tuesday evening, some students are still in shock that this would happen to a fellow Bruin.

“You can definitely tell that everybody’s… uncomfortable, sad, because you never know what’s gonna happen,” Belmont University student Jake Ditomaso said. “Everything’s so unexpected, especially getting an email like that.”

A number of people at Wednesday’s prayer vigil were crying and visibly upset. University officials spoke about Ludwig’s passion music passion and how they encourage everyone to use music as healing.

“Coming from the prayer session and vigil, students crying, hugging each other all across campus, it feels a lot like the day of the Covenant shooting, but even more so because it’s a Belmont student, not, like, a different school, so there’s a lot of sadness happening and a lot of unknown,” Belmont University student Natalie Schilling described.

Several members of the Belmont community told News 2 they have questions about safety, both on and off campus. In addition, they are still battling the shock that Ludwig was shot at a Metro park, less than a mile away from the university, in the middle of the afternoon.

“I feel like, on campus, they’re doing the best they can. Our campus security office is actually pretty good, they show up when you call and just recently adding crossing guards and helping keep students safe,” Schilling said.

Belmont University will have counselors available, but many students said it will take time for them to heal. Right now, they are showing support for Ludwig and her family, hoping she will survive.

“Sharing grief was really comforting in that a lot of times it feels like we have to do the grieving process on our own, and so having those spaces, like the vigil and today feeling like there are other people who are all on their own path, but we can all be in this moment together, it felt really healing in that way,” Schilling explained.

Meanwhile, Metro police said they arrested Taylor Tuesday night as he left an Edgehill Homes apartment on 14th Avenue South. He is being held in Metro Jail on a $280,000 bond for aggravated assault and evidence tampering in connection with the shooting that left Ludwig critically wounded.

Ministry of National Security  Update 29th October, 2023 16:30

PRESS RELEASE ON OPERATIONS IN GARU
On Tuesday, October 24, 2023 an irate youth group armed with AK 47 rifles, machetes and other weapons besieged a team of five counter-terrorism intelligence officers deployed by the Ministry of National Security to Garu, in the Upper East Region, on a critical, special operation.

Despite initial attempts to introduce themselves as National Security personnel, the irate youth group proceeded to attack the officers by firing multiple gun shots at a black Toyota Land Cruiser in which the officers were seated.
Following an escalation of the attacks on their vehicle, the officers drove to seek refuge at the Garu Police Station.

The irate youth, subsequently, pursued the officers, encircled the police station and fired multiple shots at same with the intention of killing the officers. The timely intervention of the Ghana Armed Forces enabled the safe evacuation of the National Security personnel from the Garu Police Station.

Further to the aforesaid development, the Ministry of National Security and the Ghana Armed Forces, on Saturday, October 28, 2023, conducted a joint operation in Garu to seize weapons used by the perpetrators of the attack on the National Security personnel.
