Grading of Examination

i. University Examinations will be conducted at the end of each semester for all programs of study. Each course’s examination must last a minimum of two (2) hours. Continuous assessment for courses will be based on various components, such as mid-semester examinations, class tests, essays, tutorials, assignments, etc. Students should consult their Academic Officer for grading requirements specific to their program.

ii. The End-of-Semester examination will carry a weight of 70%, while continuous assessment will contribute 30% to the total marks for each course.

iii. Grading of examinations will be as follows:

Mark (%) | Letter Grade | Remark
70 – 100 | A | Excellent
60 – 69 | B | Very Good
50 – 59 | C | Good
40 – 49 | D | Pass
0 – 39 | F | Fail
I | Incomplete (Medical)
I* | Mark not available

Pass Mark: The minimum pass mark for any course is 40%. However, a Cumulative Weighted Average (CWA) of 45.00 is required at the end of each year, which includes Supplementary Examinations, to maintain good academic standing.

For students who do not meet the CWA requirement:
Probation: 1st, 2nd, or 3rd-year students with a CWA between 40.00 – 44.99.
Repetition: 2nd or 3rd-year students with a CWA below 40.00.
Withdrawal: 1st-year students with a CWA below 40.00.

Graduation Requirements

i. To graduate, students must:
a. Complete the prescribed credit hours for their program.
b. Achieve a minimum Cumulative Weighted Average (CWA):
Undergraduate – 45.00
Diploma – 45.00
Certificate – 45.00
Some programs (Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dental Surgery, Optometry, Pharmacy) require 50%.
c. Pass all required courses.
d. Satisfy other requirements of the Department, Faculty, and College Boards.

Class

ii. The class of degree for most undergraduate programs will be determined by the following Cumulative Weighted Averages:
First Class: 70.00 or above
Second Class (Upper Division): 60.00 – 69.99
Second Class (Lower Division): 50.00 – 59.99
Pass: 45.00 – 49.99
Some programs (Medicine, Dental Surgery, Veterinary Medicine, Optometry, Pharmacy) are classified under PASS degree.

iii. Diploma and certificate awards will be determined by the following Cumulative Weighted Averages:

Distinction: 70.00 or above

Pass: 45.00 – 69.99

NOTE: A final year student who passes all courses but does not meet the required CWA of 45.00 can use a grace period to improve the CWA to qualify for the award of the certificate/degree.

Definitions:

Supplementary Examinations: These exams are conducted at the end of the academic year for trail courses and are open to eligible students, including those who missed exams due to illness.

Trail: A student trails a course when they fail to obtain a pass mark (F) or receive an Incomplete (I) or have Deferred (Df) a course.

Fail: A student fails a course when they score below 40% (or the program-specific pass mark) or do not write an exam without a valid reason.

Incomplete (I/I*): Given when a student couldn’t write an exam due to acceptable reasons.

Deferred course (Df): An unregistered course that a student was required to register but couldn’t due to exceeded credit hours.

Probation: Students with a CWA of 40.00 to 44.99 after Supplementary Examinations are placed on probation, which must be improved within two semesters to avoid repetition.

Repetition: Students are required to repeat a year under specific circumstances, such as low CWAs or multiple probation periods.

Withdrawal: Students are withdrawn from a program under various circumstances, including failing multiple courses or absenteeism.

Grace Period: Final year students have a limited time to correct deficiencies after Supplementary Examinations to meet CWA requirements for graduation.
