“CETAG Announces Withdrawal of Services Due to Government’s Failure to Comply with National Labour Commission’s Orders”

31st July 2023 Accra, Ghana – The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has decided to withdraw teaching and related services in all 46 public colleges of education in Ghana. This action is in response to the government’s failure to comply with the Arbitral Award Orders issued by the National Labour Commission (NLC) on 2nd May, 2023.

During the National Delegates Conference held from Sunday, 30th to Monday, 31st July, 2023, CETAG resolved that starting from Tuesday, 1st August, 2023, all tutors in the public colleges of education will withdraw their services until the government fulfills the NLC’s orders.

The demands of CETAG include the full payment of seven months’ arrears of allowances owed to its members as per the NLC’s Arbitral Award Order. Furthermore, CETAG is seeking compensation for additional duties performed in 2022, publication of the report of the Staff Audit, extension of public universities’ rates of allowances to deserving CETAG members, and the immediate release of the leave roster to enable tutors to take their entitled leave days.

Additionally,

CETAG is calling for the unconditional cancellation of the “killer” all-year-round academic calendar starting from the 2023/2024 academic year.

CETAG has directed all Principals of the public colleges of education, the President of the Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and the President of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) to take note of this resolution and act accordingly.

“We have made numerous efforts to engage with our employer and have our concerns addressed, but the government has failed to comply with the NLC’s orders,” said Mr. Prince Obeng-Himah, the National President of CETAG. “We are left with no choice but to withdraw our services until our demands are met.”

CETAG is urging all its branch associations to act promptly and support the withdrawal of services as instructed.
