GNAT supports re-introduction of Corporal punishment in schools

GNAT supports the re-introduction of Corporal punishment in schools

31st July 2023 – The recent assault case at Adisadel College has sparked renewed discussions about the use of corporal punishment in schools. In the past few weeks, incidents of indiscipline have been reported at various senior high schools, including Labone SHS.

In 2019, the Ghana Education Service implemented a ban on all forms of corporal punishment in schools, instead promoting the use of the “Positive Discipline Toolkit” in all pre-tertiary institutions.

 GES TO SANCTION TEACHERS …

However, there are some members of the public who believe that this decision has contributed to the rise in indiscipline among students.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has once again called for the reintroduction of corporal punishment in schools. They argue that this should be accompanied by empowering teachers to effectively implement disciplinary measures.

Thomas Musah, the General Secretary of GNAT, has joined the chorus of voices advocating for the reintroduction of corporal punishment in schools.

He believes that such measures would help instill discipline among students.

This need no deliberation…
It has been stated clearly in the bible.
” Spare the rod and spoil the child” For modernization sake, we are all doomed.

No matter whoever you are, no matter your societal status but if you’re not discipline, you are nothing than a threat to the society and the nation at large.
When corporal punishment was ban, we didn’t seems to foresee its repercussions in the near future like exactly now.
Men decided to outsmart God, only to realized that they were just exposing the level of their ignorance to its acme.
A time has come and the said time is now, for men who occupy positions of leadership and spaces of authority to understand that, the highest form of intelligence, knowledge and wisdom of a man is the highest form of ignorance, foolishness and the stupidity of that said man in the face of HE who formed him.
I’m just asking a humble and a harmless question, whether or not God wasn’t wise enough for the Biblical statements below;
Divine discipline 1

24 If you don’t punish your children, you don’t love them. If you do love them, you will correct them. Proverbs 13:24 GNV(Good News Version)

24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes. Proverbs 13:24 KJV

Discipline 2

Don’t hesitate to discipline children. A good spanking won’t kill them. proverbs 23:13 GNV

13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Proverbs 23:13 KJV

Divine discipline 3

17 Discipline your children and you can always be proud of them. They will never give you reason to be ashamed. Proverbs 29:17 GNV

17 Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul. Proverbs 29:17 KJV

If God Almighty not only in HIS infinite wisdom but also in HIS infallible words stated these categorically and emphatically without any equivocation, why then do men want to be smarter than their MAKER.
We must remember that, smartness is not a permanent attitude.

Though the reason (s) for the ban on the corporal punishment was and is still not clear to me, but I want to suggest some leaders whom the fortune of luck or chance of God smiles on them, who had one or two of their ward (s) being flogged or spanked or whatever adjective you may like by some teachers for their malfeasance thought it wise to ban corporal punishment without any anticipatory or proactive thoughts of its adverse repercussions.
They equally forget easily that, teachers are not only trained mentally or cognitively but also affectively or emotionally to have known where, when, how and why to administer corporal punishment and to whom it may concern.

Not even mad people on street are going round with a rattan in their hands whipping or flogging people anyhow, let alone of professionals who are well versed in what they do.

Corporal punishment is first among the best forms of punishment.
I will not explain why but what I can say for short is that, I’m teacher for over 2 decades experience and I equally have children but on countless times I told my children instructors/facilitators about the new GES law that prohibits corporal punishment to be precise caning is not applicable or binding any of my children.
I know majority will say I’m mentally deranged but it’s better to be mad and have your children well discipline than to claim to be normal and have your children to be indiscipline( moral turpitude).

I supported the idea hundred percent and l could remember because of punishment l force to learn how to read at basic three in the year 1985 . Today look at human rights issue JHS 3 student is now forcing to read and write their final examination why ? . Because ateacher want to protect their salary so it left over to them if they can bring the corporal punishment again.

I think the ban on corporal punishment had rather introduced corporal punishment on teachers by the students.
Given students the power to do whatever they want including attacking and insulting whoever that come their way.
They should compare students of those days when corporal punishment was there and gabbage we are having now.

This corporal punishment we’re talking about here shouldn’t have been banned in the first place. Look at the end result we’re seeing now in our schools. A couple of years back, a headteacher was beaten to death by students at Asiakwa; what happened to those unscrupulous students?
If we fail to discipline these kids, we’ll see worse things than what we’re seeing now.
