Revolutionizing Education: Aviation and Aerospace Programs Set to Soar in SHS next Academic Year
In a groundbreaking announcement, the Minister of Education has unveiled plans to introduce aviation and aerospace education in Senior High Schools (SHS) in Ghana.
This visionary move aims to cultivate aeronautical interest from an early age, ultimately nurturing a skilled workforce for the field.
During the launch event of the 2023 Ghana Teacher Prize held on August 23rd, 2023, Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, shared this ambitious plan. Notably, aerospace engineering education will start next Academic year in some selected Senior High Schools. In the USA the program extend from Kindergarten through, High School and beyond. The initiative included provisions for high school students to undertake internships with organizations like NASA, a rare opportunity to gain practical experience in their formative years.
Afia Kubi Ampem SHS
The Minister highlighted the transformational journey of Afia Kubi Ampem SHS, a beacon of innovation. He lauded the school’s achievements, particularly showcasing how young Ghanaian girls collaboratively piloted an unmanned aircraft, covering an impressive one square mile before landing.
This accomplishment drew the attention of Zipline, UMAT, and the Ministry of Defense, all expressing interest in partnering to nurture drone creation among SHS students.
Under the revamped curriculum, even science-focused students can delve into the arts for a year, bridging interdisciplinary gaps.
The introduction of aviation and aerospace as formal courses, rather than mere clubs, in Senior High Schools marks a pivotal shift.
Mr. Ferdinand Sam
This comprehensive Aerospace and Aviation program, set to launch in select High Schools in the upcoming academic year, owes its existence to the visionary efforts of Mr. Ferdinand Sam. A Geography Teacher and an avid enthusiast of aerospace engineering, Sam’s journey from participating in projects at KNUST to establishing a club at Afia Kubi Ampem SHS paved the way for this monumental educational offering.
Teacher to Student ratio in SHS
Minister Adutwum discredited claims of a staggering 1:24000 teacher-student ratio in SHS, asserting the true ratio to be 1:15. Such clarifications underscore the government’s dedication to quality education and student engagement.
The Minister’s address emphasized the importance of modernizing Ghanaian education in line with the 21st century, echoing the introduction of STEM-focused schools.
With aviation and aerospace education taking flight in SHS, Ghana propels itself into a new era of educational innovation, primed to nurture skilled professionals in these high-demand fields.
