We’re not canceling BECE – GES
FLASHBACK ”4. BECE shall be replaced by placement exams at JHS 3 to enroll students into SHS 1.” Summary of the Alleged Controversial New Curriculum for Basic Schools to SHS
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has denied claims that it plans to cancel the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for junior high school students.
GES explained that it is moving from the old objectives-based curriculum to the standards-based curriculum, which is likely to change the nature and form of the BECE.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement on the grading system by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the Director General of GES, Dr. Eric Nkansah, said reports of the purported cancellation of the BECE are untrue.

Not Canceling BECE
“We are not canceling the BECE. What is confusing people or some of our people is that we are now moving away from the old objectives-based curriculum to the standards-based curriculum, and it does not mean that those on the standards-based curriculum will not write BECE. They will also write but perhaps the nature and form may change. So please don’t communicate that we are not writing BECE.”
The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is conducted by WAEC and serves as a standard exam for junior high school graduates who are about to enter senior high school. Citinewsroom.
The reason why people believed the BECE would be canceled is that, during the Standard Base curriculum training and implementation, the public was made to believe, Basic 2, 4, 6, and JHS 2 would write the National Standard Test, with Basic 9 writing the entrance exams into the SHS.
Background
All students in JHS 1 – SHS 1 shall run a Common Core Programme called CCP which comprises 9 subjects; namely Maths, Languages, Science, RME (stand-alone subject), Physical and Health Education (not examinable), Career Technology, Social Studies, Computing and Creative Art and Design.
3. A new examination called the National Standard Assessment Test (NSAT) shall be conducted at Primary 2, 4, 6, and JHS 2.
4. BECE shall be replaced by placement exams at JHS 3 to enroll students into SHS 1.
