DVLA Announces Replacement of Old Driver’s Licenses with Smart Cards

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has officially launched an initiative to phase out all old driver’s license cards issued before September 2017. In a statement released on September 6, 2023, the DVLA declared that these antiquated cards will be substituted with state-of-the-art smart driver’s license cards.

This transition period will be in effect from now until March 31, 2024, beyond which all previous PVC card driver’s licenses will become invalid, as decreed by the Authority.

DVLA cordially invites all holders of the outdated PVC card driver’s licenses to promptly submit them to their nearest DVLA office for a thorough verification process and a seamless replacement with the new smart card driver’s license. Notably, this transition comes at no additional cost to the license holders.

DVLA has cautioned that individuals who fail to replace their PVC card driver’s licenses within the stipulated timeframe will be obligated to reapply and complete all mandatory tests to obtain a new driver’s license.

For the convenience of the public, here are the requirements for replacing your driver’s licenses:

Requirement

Mandatory eye test at any DVLA accredited eye test center, with a successful pass.

Personal presentation of the old driver’s license at the nearest DVLA office for replacement.

Check if your license is Part

Additionally, DVLA seizes this opportunity to remind all holders of the smart card driver’s licenses to  check the renewal dates on the back of their licenses and ensure timely renewal, which can be done up to a month prior to the expiration date.
