GNAT Reverses Unannounced 2% Deduction on Teachers’ Salaries, CAGD to Make Payment

Information obtained from Validators indicates the Controller and Accountant’s General’s Department Has effected the payment of 2% Deducted from Some Teacher’s Salaries in November on behalf of GNAT PROVIDENT
FUND SCHEME (TIER-3). The Reverse Process initiated by GNAT came as a result of discontentment shown by teachers for the unannounced deductions.

In a surprising turn of events, teachers across the nation expressed their discontent over an unexpected 2% deduction from their basic salary in November 2023, orchestrated by the Teacher Union GNAT. This unforeseen cut sparked significant unrest among members.

Responding swiftly to the agitation, the Teacher Union GNAT promptly reversed its decision regarding the 2% deduction. Engaging in discussions with the Controller and Accountants Generals Department (CAGD), GNAT successfully arranged for the reimbursement of the deducted amounts.

The official statement released by GNAT reads as follows:

GHANA NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS
ADDRESS ALL COMMUNICATIONS TO THE GENERAL SECRETARY
RE: TWO PERCENT (2%) ON BASIC SALARY DEDUCTION FOR GNAT PROVIDENT
FUND SCHEME (TIER-3) FOR ALL NON-CONTRIBUTOR GNAT MEMBERS

Following the National Officers meeting held today Wednesday, November 29, 2023, on the
deduction of the two percent (2%) on the basic salary for the GNAT Provident Fund Scheme (Tier-3)
for all non-contributing GNAT members, and our letter Ref 0844/NOL.IU93/23 dated
November 14, 2023, on the above subject matter;

We write to withdraw the said letter and apologize for any inconvenience caused to the National
Council and our members.

Meanwhile, we wish to assure the National Council and all our members that their concerns are not only
welcomed but also noted and that steps are being taken to address them at the Controller and Accountant
General’s Department (CAGD).

LETTER TO CAGD 4th December 2023.

In today’s letter, GNAT has asked the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to suspend indefinitely the deduction of the 2% and refund November 2023 Deductions to the affected Teachers.

Look forward to the Refund as soon as possible.
