A recent incident in Ablekuma West has sparked controversy as more than 20 teachers in the district find themselves facing an official inquiry.

They failed to attend a thanksgiving service upon the invitation of their district’s educational director, which has now raised concerns about their rights and working conditions.

Renowned broadcaster Serwaa Amihere shared this development on her platform, X, on  Friday in 2023.

The 20 teachers in question missed the Thanksgiving service organized by the Ablekuma West district educational director, which prompted an inquiry into their actions. Notably, these teachers have raised allegations of rights violations against the director, accusing them of a history of infringing on their rights over the past years.

Amihere’s post featured a copy of the query letter titled “Ablekuma West Education Directorate Query Form.” This letter clearly stated that the teachers had failed to comply with the directive to close their classes and participate in the Thanksgiving service.

This revelation has drawn considerable attention and sparked a flurry of comments from the public. Many expressed their lack of surprise, citing a recurring pattern of behavior from district education directors that undermines teachers’ respect and autonomy. Allegations of power abuse and intimidation were brought up, with some individuals remarking on the ease with which teachers can be reprimanded for expressing their opinions.

Additionally, some voiced skepticism about the director’s potential denial of the situation, predicting that flimsy excuses might be offered in defense. The overall sentiment highlighted the unfortunate trend of teacher intimidation by superiors, calling on the Ghana Education Service to address these issues.

In the context of this unfolding situation, calls were made for directors and workers to familiarize themselves with the GES Code of Conduct to foster a more peaceful working environment. The letter leak to SeekersNewsGH, detailing transfers of teachers who failed to comply with directorial directives, has raised questions about the extent of such actions within a year’s time.

As the NTC registrar indicated, a significant number of teachers have already left their positions, with more considering the same course of action. This has prompted calls for swift action by the Ghana Education Service and for teacher unions to investigate these cases.

These developments underscore the concerning issue of teacher intimidation and misconduct within the educational system, emphasizing the need for accountability and change in the Ghanaian education sector.
