As the academic year of 2023 comes to a close, the Ghana Education Service (GES) finds itself under mounting pressure from stakeholders, parents, teachers, and students alike, all eagerly awaiting the release of the official academic calendar for 2023/2024.
In a state of uncertainty, many individuals are feeling left in the dark without any official information at hand. While unofficial academic calendars have been circulating on social media platforms, GES must provide clear and authoritative guidance regarding the upcoming academic year.

PURPORTED 2023/2024 ACADEMIC CALENDAR FOR BASIC SCHOOLS (38 WEEKS):
FIRST TERM (12 WEEKS)
- 3RD OCTOBER, 2023 TO 21ST DECEMBER, 2023
SECOND TERM (14 WEEKS)
- 9TH JANUARY, 2024 TO 11TH APRIL, 2024
THIRD TERM (12 WEEKS)
- 7TH MAY TO 25TH JULY, 2024
Private Schools
Private schools, although some have already shared their academic calendars for the next year, predominantly align their schedules with the official GES calendar. Therefore, GES’s release of the 2023 academic calendar is not only eagerly anticipated but also has a far-reaching impact.

Furthermore, the official 2023 academic calendar extension includes important dates for various levels:
SHS 3
SHS 2
- Academic year ends from 14th Aug. 2023 to 30th Nov. 2023.
SHS 1
- Academic year ends from 18th Sept. 2023 to 30th Nov. 2023.
- Reopening Date for SHS 1 Students 2023 September

Single Track SHS
- Academic year concludes from 9th June 2023 to 15th Sept. 2023.
For KG/Primary and JHS:
JHS 3
- Third Term commences on 27th June 2023, leading up to BECE in September 2023. BECE itself is scheduled for 7th August to 11th August 2023.

KG to JHS2
- Third Term runs from 27th June 2023 to 14th September 2023.
With the official GES Academic Calendar in use, students are set to return to school on 3rd October 2023, marking the beginning of the 2023/2024 Academic Year.
It’s important to note that the 2023 Academic calendar is ending on 14th September 2023 for public schools and 19th September 2023 for most private schools. As updates may arise, we advise contacting head teachers for the latest information.
