Change SHS Reopening Date; Teacher Unions to GES
The Pre-Tertiary Teacher Unions in the Ghana Education Service (GES) have expressed concern about challenges related to the reopening and reporting dates for Senior High Schools (SHS).
They note that the placement of first-year students was done on November 28, 2023, and is ongoing, making the announced reporting date of December 4, 2023, impracticable.
The unions argue that this situation imposes an undue burden on students, staff, and parents.
Additionally, they highlight that the vacation period from December 21, 2023, to January 2, 2024, is too short to provide meaningful rest for both teaching and non-teaching staff. The unions, including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-GH), call on the GES to reconsider and make necessary changes to the dates.
They emphasize the need for a swift response from the Director-General of the GES.

REOPENING DATES FOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS
We the Pre-Tertiary Teacher Unions in Ghana Education Service (GES), have noted with
concern some challenges with the reopening and reporting dates of students and staff to
Senior High Schools.
Placement of first year students into Senior High Schools was done on the 28th of
November 2023, and the process is still ongoing.
The announced date for the reporting of first year students which is slated for 4th December 2023, appears not practicable due to the fact that, the placement and the reopening dates are too close.
In addition, asking form one Students to report on 4th December 2023 only for them to go home again on 21st December 2023, for christmas Break will put an undue burden on students, staff and parents.
The vacation which spans from the 21″ of December 2023, to the 2nd of January 2024, is
too limited a time to offer members of staff (both Teaching and non Teaching) any
meaningful rest.
We hereby call on the Management of the GES, to reconsider all these situations and
effect changes to the dates.
Counting on you for your swift response.
