Teachers Stage Protest After Colleague was flogged to death by a Parent for Beating His Son in Delta

In a heart-wrenching incident that has sent shockwaves through the educational community of Delta State, the Association of Teachers in Ika South and Ika North East local government areas of secondary schools took to the streets to peacefully protest the untimely death of their colleague, Onyeisi Sunday Ufah. Ufah tragically lost his life due to severe beating by a parent.

The father of the student accused of causing this tragedy, Nweke Nnajiofor, is identified as a butcher hailing from Enugu State.

Before his passing, Ufah dedicated his life to teaching Physics at Alihame Mixed Secondary School in Alihame, Agbor.

It was on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, that this unfortunate incident unfolded within the school compound.

The accused, currently in police custody, launched an attack on the school premises seeking revenge for his son’s actions.

The son had reportedly climbed over the school’s fence to consume palm wine pilfered from a nearby elderly man.

With deep sorrow in their hearts, the teachers demanded justice for their departed colleague and sought protection from the state government against unruly students and their parents, who often resort to harassment.

Marching through the streets of Agbor City, the Teachers raised their voices for change.

During the protest, Comrade Isaac Arimokwu, the NUT chairman for Ika South, spoke with reporters. He expressed the anger and grief of his fellow educators over the untimely demise of Ufah, emphasizing his dedication to the teaching profession. Ufah was revered as one of the most exceptional physics instructors in the community.

Comrade Matthew Chima Anyia, widely known as Chimex, the publicity secretary for the Ika South NUT, emphasized the alarming increase in attacks on teachers, citing Ufah’s death as a grim example.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Oborevwori, the governor of Delta State, strongly condemned Ufah’s murder. He warned parents and guardians against resorting to unlawful measures when teachers discipline their misbehaving children and wards, stressing that such actions are unacceptable in all state schools.

“As a state government, we take a strong stand against parents intimidating teachers who are rightfully applying disciplinary measures to correct students’ misbehavior, as alleged in this case,” said Oborevwori. “I have instructed the state police command to conduct a thorough investigation into this case and ensure that the perpetrators face justice.”
