Collective Agreement ; NAGRAT Urgently Calls Government to the Negotiation Table

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) is urging the government to as a matter of urgency, return to the negotiation table with all teacher unions in the country to address the outstanding issues from challenges raised last year with regards to their conditions of service.

According to NAGRAT, the government must begin the negotiations now and conclude in the shortest possible time for cool heads to prevail to end all uncertainties, which may likely trigger some strike actions.

Speaking to the media at the Adonten Senior High School in the Akuapem South Municipality on the sidelines of a health screening and fun games to kick off a series of activities earmarked for the commemoration of NAGRAT’s 25th Anniversary Celebrations, the Eastern Regional Chairman of NAGRAT Awoonor Yevu Godwin who dispelled claims their request is premised on the fact that it’s an election year and called on government to show commitment to the welfare of teachers.

“We are asking the government to begin negotiations with the leadership of all the teacher unions in the country so that in the shortest possible time, they will come out with a very good proposal and come to the table and all teachers will know what the government has for us.”

Addressing Teachers’ Concerns: A Call for Fair Compensation and Recognition

In recent times, the teaching fraternity in our country has found itself at the center of a growing debate surrounding the adequacy of their conditions of service. The revelation of payslips from various sectors, with a notable leak involving other public servants, has left many teachers feeling undervalued and overlooked for their invaluable contributions to the development of our nation.

A particular cause for concern is the hyperreaction sparked by an old leaked payslip of an Audit Service public servant. This incident has intensified the dissatisfaction among teachers, as they question the fairness of their compensation in comparison to their counterparts in different sectors.

Despite the existence of written allowances in their Collective Agreement, a substantial number of teachers argue that they do not receive these entitlements. This sentiment raises pertinent questions about the implementation and adherence to the agreements outlined in their contract. Of significant concern is the issue of the professional allowance and the ambiguity surrounding clause 24 of the Collective Agreement, which prompts teachers to question whether they should bear the cost of courses related to their profession.

This is the Amount teachers get as Professional Allowance and clause 24 of the C. A; Are Teachers to pay for the Courses?

In response to these challenges, teachers are voicing their concerns and making demands for a more comprehensive compensation package. Among the recent demands are the inclusion of a housing allowance, a percentage-based transport allowance, access to salary advances, an entertainment allowance, and other essential benefits that acknowledge the significant role teachers play in shaping the future of our nation.

When engaging with teachers on this matter, it became evident that many are content with their base salary.

Their primary grievance lies in the absence of adequate allowances that recognize the extra efforts they invest in nurturing the next generation.

Both the government and teacher unions must come to the negotiating table promptly. The mounting pressure on teacher unions calls for urgent intervention to address these concerns and prevent further discontent among Teachers.

In the spirit of fostering a conducive learning environment and promoting the welfare of those entrusted with our children’s education, the government must engage with teacher union leadership.

A resolution that meets the legitimate demands of teachers will not only enhance their morale but also contribute to the overall improvement of our education system. Swift action is needed to ensure that the voices of our Teachers are heard and that their dedication to the development of our nation is duly recognized and rewarded.
