Toggle2024 BECE Alleged to be 5 Subjects Up Against No BECE but SHS Entrance Exams
In a recent development that has stirred discussions on social media and educational platforms, the Ghanaian government is reportedly considering a significant change to the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Allegedly, the 9-subject BECE might be reduced to a more focused 5-subject assessment, as revealed by Agyemang-Duah in an interview with Accra-based MX24 during a seminar held in Accra.
Withdrawal of Our World Our People (OWOP) from Primary School Curriculum NaCCA
Agyemang-Duah, in the interview, shed light on the careful deliberation and expert advice that led to this pivotal decision. The collaboration with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NACCA) and various stakeholders aims to create a more purposeful and meaningful learning environment for students.
The decision involves eliminating the subject “Our World Our People” from the curriculum. According to Agyemang-Duah, this move comes after a thorough examination that revealed significant overlap with social studies, making the learning experience burdensome and potentially redundant for students.
“We realized that the number of subjects the students learn at a particular stage was too much, and there were some subjects that were more or less like repetition,” explained Agyemang-Duah. The ultimate goal is to ensure that learning is not perceived as a punishment for children but rather as a meaningful and productive experience.

While the Ghana Education Service, the Ministry of Education Ghana, and other stakeholders have not officially commented on this matter, the information remains at a preliminary level. The stakeholders are expected to release an official statement, and the public is encouraged to await their response for further clarity.
No BECE
Earlier information about the New Curriculum for Basic Schools suggested that learners would write exams at various stages, with Basic 9 students taking placement exams into Senior High School (SHS). Basic 10, corresponding to SHS 1, would be a decisive phase where learners focus on core subjects and later select career-based courses in SHS 2 and SHS 3.
